GH 5 Housings

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I'm trying to choose a housing for my new GH5.

I'm really keen on staying with the Pana 14-42 PZ lens, which means that the best choice seems to be down to Subal, Nauticam or, possibly, Aquatica. I was getting ready to go for the Nauticam, but the Aquatica is a lot cheaper - it's just that I'm still not sure if they can house the 14-42 PZ, whereas both Subal and Nauticam do.

Does anyone have any particular recommendations or suggestions? Any aluminium housing manufacturer I've missed? Easy Dive have already told me they don't accommodate this lens.

I've been using a GH2 in a 10-Bar housing for the last few years, so I'm assuming any of these housings will be an improvement in terms of ergonomics, at the expense of well...., more expense!

Cheers,

Matt

I personally like the layout of the buttons on the Nauticam housings, specifically for the GH4 and GH5. The dedicated large back button focus, and re-routed WB and ISO buttons make for very intuitive operation. The GH2 and GX85 housings do not have these conveniences. I can't speak for the other housings.

I very seriously considered the Aquatica for my GH5 but it was coming too late to market for my trip last month, so I went for the Nauticam, which certainly is a well thought-out housing. There are two things I dont like:

- buttons are plastic rather than metal

- the N85 port system is limiting use of fatter lenses / Metabones adaption.

The Aquatica housings are build like a tank. All buttons metal, larger port opening. For 1000 bucks less than Nauti you cant go wrong. But the 14-42PZ is not in their lens chart unfortunately.

Isotta is also making a Alu housing, as are Sealux and Aquapazza in addition to those you mentiond.

The 14-42Pz gives you a lot of versatility in the Nauti. But the worse inconvenience in my opinion is that there is no a compact Dome for the 7-14 / 12-35 for traveling. So you get a more compact housing but add a lot of extra volume with the 8" dome.

I have the 6” wide angle port for the 7-14 and I don’t feel is that big. It is the most compact option for rectilinear lenses on the market except the olympus 9-18

Yes, that's why I was talking about the 8" Aquatica dome Vs the 6" of the Nauti

8” is large the Nauticam port is 6” wide and 5” tall it fits in a backpack

That is my point. Aquatica housing is smaller than Nauti but, since is lacking a smaller dome is not worth it in terms of total volume when travelling

You have two dimensions volume and weight. Volume simply means you may need to place in hold weight instead is always a problem

Haven’t checked the aquatica but nauticam hardware around the housing is quite heavy

Thanks. I get it now.

I just wish to see some footage comparing IBIS on and Off underwater under the same conditions

I have looked at the aquatica port system. All lenses I use the most for still images are supported however for zoom lenses there is no flat port option to use a wet lens. This for me is a significant limitation for video
