GH5S Rumours...

Recommended Posts

Seems very odd eh!

I would presume the GH5 has been selling well, production costs should be going down so profitability up, on top of that the recent G9 and EVA releases, which seems to be getting good reviews - its seems a very odd time of year to start leaking details of a GH5 bigger brother - there isn't anything close to it (4k 10bit 4:2:2, plus 60fps etc etc - perhaps they've got wind of the A7sIII...?) - but really, make people nervous of buying the G9 or a GH5 this side of Christmas? Odd!!

Reading DVX and a few other places, its spooked a few people in delaying purchasing a GH5, or already off loading their GH5 incase of a massive depreciation.

Apart from the lack of details, if the photos are true (loads of conjecture on 43rumours.com) then for us, we seem to of escaped the need for a new GH5s housing, as it appears identical in size and button layout - phew *if its worth the upgrade.

But we come back to the why, if its the same externally, its only electronics that are changed, and apart from a lower pixel count sensor, to increase low light sensitivity and increase DR - what can they really add only a year in from the initial GH5 release. It was slated for the poor AF performance and relatively poor low light compared to the A6500 and the like, but can they really justify a Mkii without some of the original headline features - 6K anamorphic, open gate mode etc, just to gain better low light and perhaps slightly better AF? (5k would need a 14.8Mpix sensor at least)

If it has really clean 6400,12800 and more DR etc - then that would be of real use to us.

Well, looking forward to seeing what comes, but gee tech moves too fast for me (and my wallet) these days.

ya, sounds odd, but who knows. Panasonic seems to be having a good run right now. And maybe they just want to double-down and keep or better even grow further their lead on video features. Who knows. Id certainly appreciate 4K HDR at 10 bit and 60fps :-) And a faster chip to support higher HEVC encoding bitrates.

If its the same shape and layout as the GH5 - worth looking at. But this may all turn out to be a fake news in the end...

If true I am definately interested... my main complaint so far is low-light performance, especially on deep glass sponge reefs.

Panasonic is kinda trying imitate Sony. Just squeeze us like lemons and search for max profitability splitting their products.

If rumors are true soon we will have the Pana version of A7S, A7R and A9.

Simple as that

Now they're say January 8th for announcement. Like the A7R III is to the GH5 the GH5S is to compete with the A7S II and III. If PANASONIC can compete with the A7S II, III's low light and at a price point that is half that of Sony. Add in 60 fps 4:2:2 and the fact it look to be released ahead of the A7S III and don't could be in a world of trouble. I wish one of the manufacture would release a video type housing for these cameras that are obviously geared towards videographers anyway.

Will be very interesting to see if this is more than just rumors.

Sweet mother! We're saved (..from another housing upgrade)

Same dimensions and button layout as the GH5 - so whatever image improvements it will have, its going to be a cheap upgrade for existing GH5 shooters!

Great news! So the camera is actually confirmed? Super excited about this.

Of course nothing is confirmed before Panasonic officially announces it. But I'd say the rumour is gonna be 95% certain by now. The exact specs will be very interesting. And if it Fits the GH5 housing I may well be a taker just for the better low light capabilities. Not shooting pics anyway, so I would not miss the larger sensor of the GH5(sans-s).

If you had to guess. How soon after release would the housing be ready. Looks like the record button is on top

If that's all that's different u just use the shutter instead of record button. Pretty simple solution.

The GH5 also has a record button on top its just not red but black with a small red dot :) You can hit either that record button or the shutter button to trigger recording- whatever pleases you more :) I use the shutter.

So I hope very much it will fit the existing housing.

I would say its a definite now, there has been some video shot with it, there has been some unintentional photos of it, i think the main questions are now:

What does it do that would be worth upgrading your GH5 for

When's it released.

Its the same button layout as the current GH5, the record button on top, just has a new colour.

Rumour is March

I just got the GH5 and I think this is a great move by Panasonic. I will add one as well to my kit by end of the year. I like the GH5 for the higher res, you can shoot 5K Open Gate when the light is good and if not just move to this body.

I was thinking about the GH5s last night and how would it need to be better from my GH5 to update ‘today’

Shooting video last week, I was using ISO200 at 15m with ambient lighting (at f5.6) so the massive ISO 512,000 (or whatever it will be) type thing I don’t think I’ll need.

I don’t need internal 4K60 at 10Bit as I have the Atomos.

I think if the C-AF is fixed and if there is a big jump in dynamic range that would sway me.

But if it’s just ISO then i think I’m good.

Exciting times for us! Just not our wallets

yes, but if you have 4k 60p 10bit internal, that would save you a hell of a lot of weight. And for me if its really going to do that spec, it could be the single reason to upgrade.....

I’m not sure I could give up the 7” screen now. Although you are right.

The weight saving would be immense!

TechRadar had earlier released official info.

I took at copy as I was sure it would of been taken down. It was...

https://www.icloud.com/iclouddrive/00dsgrMGNzjzPspLJlzbgNjVw

Take away:

No IBIS!

No Internal 4K@60 10bit 422

Max ISO now 51,200 (1 stop better)

Dual ISO - so should be super clean

Improved AF

Included VLOG-L

Not the upgrade for me I think, especially the removal of IBIS

For UW shooting the lack of IBIS it's a false problem nevertheless I tried it on land and it's amazing. i could use a vintage Yashica ML 50mm f1.7 handheld while walking. It's like a gimbal.

Rumors sites speculate they removed IBIS because of new sensor (maybe multi aspect like the beloved GH2).

It's a shame there's no 4K/60p 4:2:2.

They are simply maximizing their earnings mimicking Sony marketing approach.

?

I'm finding my uw footage much much better with the use of IBIS.

And yup, its multi aspect like the GH2! :)

Of course but it's something you can overcome with good technic and good balance as everybody else.

On the contrary, on land IBIS permits shots simply not achievable without a gimbal.

FInally more is better :)
