Pajjpen 63 Posted January 2, 2018 Is anyone using the 12-35 for underwater use? Saw one guy using it for filming moving and medium sized subjects that a macro lens just cant do and it seemed to perform well behind the dome. I havent seen anyone talk about this lens for underwater use on the forums tho. Anyone?
Architeuthis 133 Posted January 2, 2018 Hi Pajjpen, I do not have the Panasonic 12-35mm, but use the Zuiko 12-40mm Pro with the Zen DP170 (as several others here). Both lenses are similar, but the Zuiko is sligthly sharper in the corners and also goes to 40mm instead of 35mm: https://www.dxomark.com/Lenses/Compare/Side-by-side/Olympus-MZUIKO-DIGITAL-ED-12-40mm-F28-PRO-on-Olympus-OM-D-E-M1-Mark-II-versus-Panasonic-LUMIX-G-X-VARIO-12-35mm-F28-ASPH-POWER-OIS-on-Olympus-OM-D-E-M1-Mark-II__1233_1136_960_1136 I can say that the Zuiko 12-40mm performs very good behind the Zen DP170. According to Zen even the extension is identical for the Pana 12-35mm (for Nauticam N85 system), so maybe good performance also here: http://www.jaredparsons.com/portchart/zen-only/by-combination-group/nauticam-n85/ Wolfgang
Pajjpen 63 Posted January 2, 2018 I read about that lens too but as I shoot video Ioulent mind the stabilisation. Think I’ll order the 12-35 as I already have the 6inch dome for the 7-14, making it convenient. Btw, u wouldn’t be interested in selling your 12-35 if u don’t use it? SWink 43 Posted January 2, 2018 Pajjpen. I have the 12-35mm and find that it works really well behind the 6" Dome. But I find that I generally opt for the 7-14mm more often than not when I want to shoot wide. If you only have the dome port it is possible to do some semi-macro with the 12-35mm if shoot 4K and deliver HD with some re-framing. I also have the Olympus 12-50mm but I find that it doesn't really perform that well behind the dome. Cheers Steve

I won’t use it for much wide angle but more for medium sized subjects like octopus and stuff that tends to move that I just can’t shoot with the 60mm. Gonna give it a go in lembeh later this year
ChrisRoss 150 Posted January 3, 2018 I use the 12-40mm Olympus, Certainly for stills it's a better package, it focuses closer and achieves 0.3x magnification compared 0.17x for the Panasonic, very sharp and works well behind the Zen 170mm dome.

I am one of those guys using it for filming I find it quite useful and versatile when you don't want a true WA and a macro is too narrow. Unfortunately I only have a printed zoom gear. I had the Nauticam zoom and focus gear ordered just to find out when it arrived that it didnt fit - so it went back... Questions to Nauticam support about it have never been answered...Poor... Seems to be a lens not that much used. Still, I quite like it. It works well behind a WA Dome with the right extension as per Nauticam-chart. Very sharp and no vignetting throughout the zoom range. Maybe you got a faulty one? yes maybe, although my dealer said that would be highly unlikely, they were also labelled as 12-35. Thats why i contacted Nauticam - without success. By now I am happy enough with my plastic kit to keep it. Edited January 3, 2018 by bubffm
makar0n 55 Posted January 5, 2018 Amazing lens, one of my favourites! Use it most often as a standard lens with 6" dome (+Nauti gear, fits fine)...Great on night dives, especially fluro with some blue lights and yellow 52mm filter - it's quite good at low light. Also its quite versatile, you can have both zoom and a nice semi-wide angle. Check as Panasonic has released mk.2 of it - maybe Nauti sent you gear for the newer one ? thetrickster 328 Posted January 6, 2018 I think apart from going all black and silver in design, the dimensions and ring layout is the same as the MKi so the gearing should all be the same. ? Optically they are the same with only a couple of operational improvements (Dual IS 2, Freezeproof and stepless aperture while zooming at f2.8) I loved the lens for little I did use it, as sadly my iPhone for me seems good enough for pictures of the dog etc I originally got 12-35mm for underwater, as too had saw lots of good stuff with it and the GH3, but the same week I got the 7-14mm and the 12-35mm never got the use it deserved, as I prefer WA it seems. Hence why now I’m shooting the 14-42mm II and the WWL-1 for the 130’ FoV, which probably isn’t as optically ‘nice’ as the 12-35mm. Look forward to seeing the results Pajjpeb! Interceptor121 704 Posted May 20, 2018 Sorry to reopen this thread as I already have the 6" dome that I use with the Panasonic 7-14mm love the lens for still images would not use it for video However I am curious about the 12-35mm and specifically can you zoom all the way through or at some point it stops focussing?? Interceptor121 704 Posted May 30, 2018 (edited) So I got this lens and it presents some interesting quirks With the constant preview on in manual mode or aperture priority mode the diaphragm blades made an audible noise when you change aperture this goes away if you disable this option (to be frank unless you use ambient light you would not use it underwater) In video mode the constant preview is always on so this noise happens until you press record than strangely the camera becomes silent or the noise reduces a lot when the diaphragm closes...I am using a GH5 the lens does the same on the GX7 Edited May 31, 2018 by Interceptor121
bubffm 178 Posted May 31, 2018 Thats weird. This is a lens that is very widely used. It's the always-on-lens overland and for me and many others. Maybe you got a faulty unit?
Interceptor121 704 Posted May 31, 2018 Have found plenty of posts and it even says it on the manual If you don’t use constant preview and shoot video without using creative mode you will never realise Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
