DNC-7A(H1) VS SmallHD501

Hello,

 

Im looking forward to buy a monitor for filming and photography. For photography I like macro and super macro and want a monitor which helps me to check the focus point /sharpness after a shot.

 

I talked to several people now and have two systems on my list: DNC-7A(H1) and SmallHD501

 

Thats what I found out on my own

 

DNC-7A(H1):

pros: cheaper, smaller, lighter, 7inch size

contra: 1280*800 pixel, internal batteries

 

SmallHD501:

pros: external LP-E6, 1920*1280 pixel

contra: cheaper, heavier, 5 inch size

 

My opinion is that I can life with the internal battery from the DNC-7A(H1). But is the resolution @ 7 inch enough to check images for sharpnes/focus/backscatter?

 

It would be great to hear your opinions!

For sure go with the highest resolution screen if you are using it for critical focus usage.

 

I'm not sure 1280x800 is good enough.

I've been looking at the new Ninja Flame V - has anyone announced a housing for it yet? I haven't seen anything yet, but maybe I don't know where to look.

Dive and See have a newer 5.5 inch DNC-5A(H1) monitor that is 1920 x 1080 . I've also been debating between it and their DNC-7A(H1) 7inch 1280 X 800 monitor. As much as I would like a 7 inch monitor to look at, I think a smaller, lighter, higher Resolution monitor with less drag would be the way to go. But that little voice in your head is always saying, "isn't bigger always better" ? Its always difficult to make a buying decision when you can't hold the two items in your hand, or even try before you buy.

I can see the Ninja V having a housing ready by a number of manufacturers to go come launch in the summer. It’s the ideal size, it’s cheap and bright. Makes the Inferno a hard choice in total cost vs benefit

I have the same 5.5 and I think it is the right compromise between screen size vs. bulkiness. The monitor tools like the RGB parade are wonderful. And built in battery which may last you 3-4 dives (need to confirm this one) is a great feature. It has a zoom function too. Unless one needs external recording, this monitor is sweet. In addition, Their support is very good.

My only issue with it & could be specific to my unit is that focus peaking is not working with my GH5 if my focus is set to other than manual on the camera. For example, if my camera is set to autofocus, I can not get focus peaking on the monitor to work.

Any one is having a similar problem?

@Thani regarding the Focus Peaking: Try playing around witht the Focus Peaking settings on the montitor. I initially had the same problem that the peaking outline would disappear when I switch to Autofocus. If I remember correctly I have now set the "strength" of the Peaking outline to 23 and it now also shows up when switched to AFC.

Thanks a lot mate. You’ve solved a big problem for me. Now I can focus with my mature eyes

I believe the implementation of the “peaking level” is backward. It is unusual for a smaller number to result into strong peaking as 100 usually means strongest level. And this monitor is perfect now.

could you post some images of your monitor setup? Some pictures with an image on the screen. I would like to see how sharp the monitor is. Thanks.

 

I was also looking at the Dive and See website at the DNC-5 monitor and under the overview section it says:

 

"Focus peaking - The operator adjusts the focus control until the red outlines on the desired area are clear, indicating optimal focus. For the
best results, be sure the subject is properly exposed. Available Four colors - Red, Green, Blue, White."

 

So it looks like this works differently to other monitor in that the color disappears when focus is sharp. That would be great, as having the color fringe when focus is sharp sometimes gets in the way of what your trying to look at.

No, it works exactly as focus peaking on any other monitor: If you are in Focus the red (or whatever color you have selected) outline will appear around the focused subject. The description on the webpage maybe a bit unclear
