worzel694me 0 Posted November 30, 2018 I recently bought a Sony RX100 iii for non-dive purposes but had the idea to put it in a housing as my current Canon G10 set up is a bit old these days. Now there are days when I am in full UW photo mode under a jetty and the G10/arm/strobes style set up is what I need, but there are also days when I am out diving with non-photographers covering lots of ground quickly and it would be handy just to have the camera with the internal flash and a diffuser, stick it in program then point and shoot. So the question is, are there housings out there that allow for simple swapping between those two modes? My suspicion is that the aluminium housings like Nauticam block the internal flash with the fibre optic sockets whereas a clear plastic one would allow too much direct light when using strobes. But maybe if there was an aluminium housing with a slot-in/slot-out FOC socket...?
thegrandpoohbah 3 Posted November 30, 2018 I think the Fantasea housing is what you are looking for.
ChrisRoss 150 Posted December 1, 2018 It's all a trade off, you lose the advantages of the Nauticam housing to get a possible portability benefit. For myself I would choose the best housing and then adapt around that. The on board flash is only "good" very close, so for macro work. Maybe a better solution is a dive torch with moderate beam spread on a locline arm when you want to be more compact - depending on where you are diving you may want a dive torch with you anyway. The INON dive torches are good like that, they have models with a 30° beam spread which you can convert to 60° with a supplied diffuser.
pmk 2 Posted December 5, 2018 For RX100 there are two quite cheap housings working with flash+diffuser: - Sony MPK-URX100A - genuine Sony, max depth 40 m - SeaFrogs RX100 (I-IV) - max depth 60 m (!) with really good quality and ergonomics
