Using A CP filter underwater

Recommended Posts

Hi All

Has anyone used a circular polariser underwater? My thoughts were to give it a go in the middle of the day snorkelling in shallow water <5m with crystal clear viz with lots of light/glare.

I see people using 3 stop ND filters so that got me wondering about a CP.

Interesting question! I have not tried a polarizer under water but am curious as to the results. Light under water gets scattered quite a bit so may not be as polarized as above water. The main issue might be adjusting the angle of polarization of the filter. This may be easier to do with the EF lens adapter for filters that Canon is releasing for the RF and may be the most compelling reason to buy an RF! At this point I have not but do have a Z6.

RF housings will need to have the facility to adjust the filter in the adapter. The control is more like a command dial (on a camera), not like an aperture or zoom ring, so a simple ring will not work.

My thoughts were to just set it to maximum and go, It may also be useful for split shots when the sun is high.

"Maximum" with a CP filter is going to be relative depending on the angle of the sun. You will need to be able to rotate it as that angle changes.

Couldn't you just get a 67mm one and fit it on the wet side of the port (assuming you already have a 67mm thread there)? Then you could rotate to your heart's content.

Thanks Stig but this would be used with an 8 or 9" dome.
