Removing the ikelite bulkhead cap on my Subal ND700 housing

Hello guys,

 

I need some advise on how to remove a bulkhead cap from my ikelite bulkhead. Seems very tight. I'm using a mini vice grip/tongue and groove plier to remove it but somehow when i leverage the pliers, the entire bulkhead moves , not just the cap. Please help . Thanks

Can you use a spanner to hold the bulk head whilst twisting the cap?

Are your pliers flat jawed or round jawed?

Use round jawed vise grips or channel locks.

Get the right tools for the job, you need a spanner to stop the bulkhead turning. A standard multigrip with rounded jaws adjusted to the right size should be fine to remove cap. If it is still tight you may need some penetrating oil, like WD-40 and let it soak in for a while.

 

If you use WD-40 clean it all off afterwards and replace the o-ring. I would think you should grease the the threads a little to prevent seizing up again in the future. Also just to sure loosening a thread you turn anti-clockwise.

North Americans don't do Multi grips, it is an Aussie slang term. They do Channel locks. The correct term is tongue and groove pliers but no one uses that.

Thanks lads.. do you know the size of the bulkhead nut? Im heading over to a hardware store to get the thin wrench.

When you get it off, use Lanacote or similar on the threads. If you don't pull your cable periodically, they can become completely welded together. Don't get any on the o-rings, though. If they're completely welded and cant be unscrewed without spinning the bulkhead, a dremel and carbide disc will split the nut enough to break it open.
