I. INTRODUCTION

UW strobe quality and power have improved dramatically in the years since the popular Underwater Strobe Finder appeared here in 2004 (1), but unfortunately it is no longer accessible. Since then new UW strobes have appeared, others have retired and problems with some have surfaced. Previous excellent reviews (2), containing much still useful information, also have been overtaken by the loss of some strobes and the rapid improvements in strobe technology.

Strobe Warranty: As strobes are known to fail, often within their first year, it is wise to have a Strobe Warranty:  Some manufacturers warrant their strobe against defects, and service other problems for one year from date of purchase, many do not. Be aware that the warranty often is only valid if the strobe was purchased from a dealer licensed by the manufacturer. One can find if a dealer sells strobes under warranty via the internet. For example, to the query “Inon strobe dealer locator”, the reply was:

Inon Customer Support [World Network] www.inon.jp>customer.network. 

 For Sealife it was: “https://www.sealife-cameras.com > dealer locator.” One proceeds from there.  

For easy access the strobes are listed alphabetically, first in Part II as a Short Strobe List, followed in Part III by a more complete list of Strobe Specifications and Details.

To maintain the Finder’s usefulness, I hope the kind reader will take the time to post additions, corrections and developments.

IKELITE STROBES. All Ikelite strobes are famous for excellent lighting, solid build and long life. Lithium battery has been updated for improved performance. Ikelite is a strong advocate of TTL via sync cord. To use a fiber optic cable a special sync cord to fiber optic converter is needed. Ikelite stobes and flash tubes are justly known for being long-lasting and problem free.

Some strobe makers provide a wealth of information, others very little. All details and claims are the manufacturers, the prospective buyer need take them with a grain of salt.

Conception with know how:

Over 30 years of experience in underwater technology have gone into Hartenberger underwater strobes. Our concept for underwater strobes has led the industry for years.

A combination of proven traditional, and modern digital High Tech electronics have gone into our product development making them milestones in the industry for underwater strobe technology.

All the important components of our strobes such as the reflector, pilot light, cell packs and synchronisation cables have been developed as “plug-in” modular units. This allows numerous possibilities for technical details, functionalism and esthetical appearance.

Relying on our years of experience in manufacturing underwater strobes, enables us to give a 5 year guarantee against manufacturers defects on all the Aluminium, Plastic and Stainless Steel components. There is a 2 year guarantee on the electronics of the strobes.

Housing: A centre piece of our strobes is the specially constructed Housing, with tried and tested applications over the years. The individual parts are turned on CNC lathes using marine aluminium alloy.

To provide the best surface treatment, the entire housing is coated with AHC (Aluminium Hard Coating). This results in a surface with much more chemical and abrasion resistance than a standard anodised finish. The chemical resistance of the AHC coating is even better than stainless steel and can be found in various industrial and military applications.

Despite the fact that the front and rear housing covers can be opened without tools, the sealing is provided by special compression and axial O Rings. We only use high quality Viton O- Rings.

The mounting point on the lower side of the strobe allows a multitude of mounts to be used (M6, M8 and M10 Threads).

The switches have double O Ring seals and provide years of reliable, trouble free use.

Ergonomics

Due to the ergonomically positioned switches on the side of the strobe, the settings can be easily monitored and/or adjusted without any difficulties and your camera and strobe position underwater remains undisturbed when reaching for the switches in setting up your shots. 

Electronics

Choosing modern and over-dimensional components in combination with tested micro-processor electronics results in one of the most powerful and fastest recycling underwater strobes in the world.

The core of the Hartenberger strobes is the powerful and robust transformer. This allows a power rating of 625 watt/seconds and a recycle time at full power setting of 0,8 seconds !! (see technical specifications). The recycle time using lower power settings allows more than 10 frames per second (vital for fast motor drive use).

After recharging the condensers, the transformer switches off automatically. This reduces cell use and also avoids the prolonged radiation caused by the charging which disturbs some underwater life, causing them to flee.

The strobe ready signal appears on the switch panel of the strobe and in the viewfinder of the camera and easily visible. At the same time, a short acoustical signal (beep) can be heard.

The camera shutter speed is automatically set according to the synchronization.

A special technical feature of our strobes is the extremely short flash duration hereditary in ring formed strobe tubes.

This is necessary because some Nikon cameras (i.e. F5, F100, F90...) require the entire light for a correctly exposed picture within 1/500th of a second.

Should the strobe require longer than this to achieve the correct exposure, then the camera will not send out the TTL cut off signal to the strobe!!!

In this case, the remaining energy is released as light and results in an uncontrolled, overexposed picture. 

Mode-Settings

The right switch sets the following modes

·       OFF

·       ON without pilot light

·       ON with 100 % pilot light

·       ON with 50 % pilot light

·       ON with 25 % pilot light

·       Slave sensor with 100% pilot light

·       Slave sensor without Pilot light

·       Automatic Signal (for attention)

In this positions, the following signals are possible and generated automatically:

1. Pilot light with International SOS signal (3 x short, 3 x long, 3 x short)

2. Strobe light with SOS signal (3 x short, 3 x long, 3 x short)

3. Continuous Strobe every 15/30/60 Seconds at Full, -1 and -2 power settings

The strobe can be used as a slave unit (strobe will be activated by a primary strobe) either with or without the pilot light.

The slave sensor is not sensitive to natural daylight, but reacts very sensitively to the sharp light impulses from strobes. This allows the strobe to be used underwater at long distances from the primary strobe.

The 6 manual power settings are available for the slave mode.

A special feature is the TTL slave mode. In this mode, the amount of light which the slave produces is remotely controlled by and matched to the primary strobe!

Power-Settings

Tue following modes can be set with the left switch:

·       TTL-Mode (automatic exposure control from the camera).

·       6 Manual Power settings each of 1 f-stop.

The automatic TTL control is available for almost all types of camera and is built in as standard for the following makes of camera: Pentax, Canon EOS, NIKON F5/F4/F100/F, NIKONOS V and NIKONOS RS.

The electronics automatically recognises the type of TTL control from the connected camera.

Should there be an underexposure in TTL mode, an acoustical alarm will sound. A warning will also appear optically in the following forms: blinking ready light in the viewfinder, blinking pilot light and blinking red light on the switch panel on the side of the strobe. 

Pilot-light

The dimmable pilot light allows the user to adapt the strength of the pilot light to the ambient conditions. At reduced settings, energy is saved and the burn time is proportionally increased.

Special version without surcharge:

The pilot light can be controlled from the camera housing. This feature simply requires the appropriate switch on the camera housing.

The same switch can be used to trigger the strobe test mode. When this is activated, the strobe releases approx. 40 weak flashes within 2 seconds. This allows the photographer to judge the flood of light and establish any areas of shadow.

The beam of the pilot light is spot formed with a strong concentration in the middle point and a soft illumination of the surrounding areas. (This reduces the tunnel vision effect during night dives).

The pilot light is a plug in unit and is user replaceable.

The standard 6 V high temperature halogen Bulb is available rated at either 10 or 20 watts.

Reflectors

The plug in reflector unit with 95° beam as standard can be replaced within seconds (250/625 TTL).

A different colour temperature can be achieved by replacing the reflector. Reflectors are available with the following (approx.) colours.. 5500, 5000(standard), 4500 and 4000 Kelvin.

The crystal clear dome port can be replaced with a matt dome port. The matt port diffuses the light and generates a softer light from the strobe. The effect on the power output of the strobe is hardly noticeable.(approx-0.5/-1). 

Alarms

If by mistake you try and take a picture without first switching on the strobe, an optical and acoustical warning will get your attention.

A discharge protection prevents the cells from an uncontrolled discharge. This is indicated by an optical and acoustical alarm.

The transformer is deactivated when the cells are nearly empty, it can however be activated manually for 3-5 more additional frames.

For safety reasons (ascent), the pilot light remains functional for a few minutes.

Should water enter the housing there is a sensor which immediately detects the smallest amount of moisture. For safety reasons, the condenser is immediately discharged (automatically generating a flash). After this discharge, the pilot light and all red LED lights will blink permanently and an acoustical alarm will sound. 

Cell-packs

To remove the standard cell pack (Nickel-Cadmium) for charging, first unscrew the rear cover. The complete plug-in cell pack can then be removed or replaced with a charged pack within seconds.

The electronics are separated from the cell pack housing by O-Ring seals, this prevents moisture that has entered the cell pack housing from entering the strobe’s electronics. 

Synchronisation-Cable

The supplied standard synchronisation cable with the NIKONOS-V plug can be removed from the strobe allowing the slave mode without a cable dangling from the housing. This also means that a defective cable (expendable component) can be user replaced without sending the strobe to an authorized repair workshop.

A special feature first developed by us is the double seal NIKONOS Plug. The innovative positioning of the second O Ring provides 100% more safety and security in sealing. The plug’s thread is also kept dry whereas the original plug’s thread is surrounded by water. This prevents the vacuum which is generated when removing the plug, thus sucking water into the socket. Corrosion of the threads is also avoided.

The Ikelite DS-51 Substrobe replaces the DS50, which has been a favorite of underwater photographers the world over. In addition to incorporating all the same great features of the DS-50, the DS-51 provides a Manual Exposure Mode with six (6) manual power settings in one-half f-stop increments for precise illumination of subjects underwater.The compact, lightweight and affordable Ikelite DS51 Substrobe is an excellent choice for many underwater photographers. Its digital electronics make it fully compatible with digital cameras as well as traditional film cameras such as the Nikonos. The strobe can easily switch between TTL/Auto and any of the six (6) manual power settings for complete control over lighting the subject. The DS51’s intensity and angle of coverage make it equally suited for macro and general photography. The strobe’s wide-angle diffuser increases the angle-of-coverage up to 80 degrees, softens the light and helps to reduce backscatter. The DS51 is compatible with the Ikelite DS Sensor and EV-Controller. When used with the EV-Controller, the DS51 Mode switch is set to the TTL/Auto setting and the EV-Controller then provides ten (10) power settings in half-stop increments.

The DS161 combines power with wide angle coverage to give you the most bang for your buck.

The quality of light is exceptional due to a round flash tube and custom powder coated reflector designed specifically to deliver the softest, most even coverage possible.  Strobes with a straight flashtube may be capable of high powers, but require the addition of a diffuser to spread out their sharp, rectangular beam pattern and reduce the harsh hot spot.  The DS160 beam is designed to be perfectly soft and wide spread through its reflector design, and is capable of providing you the coverage and power you want and avoiding the one f/stop loss caused by adding a diffuser.

Patented T-shape Twin Flash  produces guide number 20 (*1) with wide circular beam angle 100_ even without a diffuser to deliver strobe light wide area. The beam coverage increases to 110_ with a diffuser. This ideal circular strobe light distribution does not require locating the strobe parallel to camera to support sophisticated and flexible angled lighting with strobe arm.

The Z-240 offers all advanced features including S-TTL Auto mode which supports TTL Auto exposure control by transmitting built-in flash light to an external strobe and compatibility with Clear Photo System. Optical connection system widely supports from transparent housing for compact digital cameras to a housing for digital SLRs with built-in flash regardless of make or model. Its sync connector accepts Nikonos 5 pin type cable to shoot in TTL Auto mode with a film camera or in Manual/External Auto mode with high end digital SLR not equipped with the built-in flash (*4).

EV. Controller to adjust exposure of S-TTL Auto

It is simple to fine-tune flash power in S-TTL Auto by dialing the EV Control Switch on the back control panel. Adjustable range is 3 steps to increase and 6 steps to decrease, to suit to personal preference or different exposure control characteristics among camera models.

Next generation wireless TTL

The Z-240 Type 4 successfully amplifies receiving optical signal from the slave sensor 20 times more comparing to previous Z-240 Type 3 to provide wireless S-TTL Auto mode using a mirror instead of an optical cable. Sea & Sea YS-D2J Underwater DS-TTL Strobe
Updated version of the YS-D2 – Made in Japan. Flash Tube Overheating has been fixed.  US$600 to $690. Has replaced the YS-D1 as the most popular UW strobe for DSLR users. Excellent night-time visibility. The illuminated control panel is ideal for night diving. 
The color of the panel illumination changes to indicate mode: aqua blue (in DS-TTL mode), blue (in slave TTL mode), orange (in manual pre-flash mode) and Green (in manual mode without pre-flash). You can check which mode the strobe is set even under pitch-black conditions. 
The maximum guide number is a powerful 32 (ISO 100, meter). Recycle time is only 1.5 sec

The YS-D2 is powerful enough to illuminate a wide area, even under very bright conditions with plenty of natural sunlight. During macro photography, where subtle exposure control is required, manual mode can easily be selected and the guide number quickly adjusted as low as 1.

DS-TTL ll automatic exposure control with improved accuracy and stability. 
SEA&SEA’s own automatic exposure control system, DS-TTL ll, has been further improved. Tuning light emitting timing in detail and adding light emission detection function, the accuracy of automatic TTL exposure has been noticeably improved. Previously, TTL photography was difficult with the lens’s aperture wide-open (maximum aperture) and images were likely to be overexposed. It is now possible to give a low powered flash so the correct exposure can be easily achieved with the YS-D2.

EV control function can finely tune the amount of light emitted. By controlling the actual flash light level, the strobe achieves accurate exposure compensation with EV compensation. As the exposure compensation range has improved to +/- 2.0 EV, users can concentrate on shooting even more creative images. (-2,0EV, -1.5EV, -1EV, -0.7EV, -0.3EV, +0.3EV, +0.7EV, +1EV, +1.5EV, +2.0EV).

Two diffusers and red filters included with the strobe as standard. By attaching one of the included diffusers, the beam angle is increased to 100° or 120° (circular) with a soft and even light. The red target light filter helps avoid disturbing skittish creatures that are likely to react to normal light. The red filter is fitted inside the diffusers.

The target light can be adjusted in 2 steps. The strobe is equipped with a target light (approximately 100/300 lumen). In use (target light switch in ON position), the light will be automatically turn off when the strobe fires and will automatically turn back ON after 0.5 sec.

Handling is greatly improved. Larger knobs and a new magnetic rotary switch help prevent controls being accidentally reset in use. With the new controls, quick operation is possible when photo opportunities suddenly appear. Custom mode is a new innovation which allows the YS-D2 to be compatible with cameras with non-standard pre-flash settings. The YS-D2 can be set to be compatible with cameras with non-standard pre-flash in DS-TTLII and manual modes.

The ULTRAPOWER UXDS-1 Digital Underwater Strobe Head from ULTRAMAX is a flash with a depth rating of 180’. It offers a guide number of 65.6’ at ISO 100 (on land), a power rating of approximately 25 Watt-sec, a coverage angle of 60°, and a daylight-balanced color temperature of 5700K. There are 5 pre-flash settings to synchronize with the built-in flash of most digital compact cameras. Choose from power/brightness output levels of 10%, 25%, 50%, and 100%. Modes

Flash Triggering

Twin slave sensors allow strobe to be triggered wirelessly by another flash, such as the camera’s built-in one. When either sensor detects light from a flash, the strobe fires instantly. You can also purchase an optional fiber-optic connector and cable for triggering.

The ULTRAPOWER UXDS-3 Digital Underwater Strobe Head $ 200, is a flash with a depth rating of 197’. It offers a guide number of 66’ at ISO 100 on land, as well as a power rating of approximately 25 watt-sec. It also has a coverage angle of 90° and a daylight-balanced color temperature of 5700K. There are 5 pre-flash settings to synchronize with the built-in flash of most digital compact cameras. Choose from power/brightness output levels from 20-100%. The strobe offers manual exposure control and has slave functionality, allowing it to be triggered by the firing of another flash.

 

LEDs indicate power level, low battery, and whether or not the flash is ready. The UXDS-3 runs on 4 AA alkaline or NiMH batteries, which are available separately and are housed in a compartment that’s completely isolated from the electronics in order to prevent water damage to the strobe if the compartment is accidentally opened or batteries are changed when the unit is still wet from a dive. Additionally, the strobe has a durable housing made of corrosion-resistant polycarbonate. The supplied diffuser widens the UXDS-3’s angle of coverage to 100° and softens its light to prevent backscatter, glare, and hard shadows. The strobe head is equipped with a standard YS connector for mounting onto an optional lighting arm.

Waterproofing

Safe to use at a maximum depth of 197’. The battery compartment cap is secured via double o-ring seal as is the main body of the housing which also has a gasket as an enhanced barrier against water penetration. To eliminate possible leakage through the housing, Ultramax has used a simple reed switch controlled by a powerful external magnet. The battery compartment is completely isolated from the electronics in order to prevent water damage to the strobe if the compartment is accidentally opened or batteries are changed when the unit is still wet from a dive.
