A7R3 + Tokina 10-17 ?

Hi all,

I've been shooting with a 7D + Tokina 10-17 for some years now, with great pleasure.

I've upgraded to a Sony A7R3 recently and consider selling my underwater gear to make my new toy dive...

Questions :

1. is it worth using the A7R3 with the Tokina (with a metabones adatper) ?

2. I consider buying a Nauticam housing ; what would be the best port/extension combination for this set up ?

My experience of the 10-17 on a full frame sensor (for me the Nikon D800) was not great.  They are terrific on a DX/cropped sensor but on FF not so much. Not sharp.

The Tokina is not the sharpest knife in the drawer and its an APS-C lens so doesn't have the coverage to cover the sensor in fullframe.  The pixel pitch is similar in both so no resolution advantage if for example you shot it in cropped mode, you would get the dynamic range boost though.  The Canon 8-15 plus metabones would be an option.  This is the Nauticam port chart:  https://drive.google.com/file/d/1IUWtZfFMXYF1OElfWzRVOqPKL9p3P4SH/view

I’ve seen the 8-15, but it’s not exactly the cheapest lens available...

using the 10-17 would have been an affordable way to start with my A7 underwater...

Any feedbacks about the 28mm+WWL1 combo ? 
it’s said to be good enough (some say sharp) and still affordable. 
To me, the main drawback is that this configuration is not versatile at all. If I want to move to a 15mm or the 8-15 one day I’ll have to change the ports again...

I suspect if you used it as an interim lens it would use the same port but different extension as the 8-15.  You could work out the the required extension by comparing the extension required for the 10-17 and the 8-15 on your Canon and how much extension is required for the metabones.  A zoom ring might be an issue - requiring a custom ring to be fabricated possibly.

Have you considered the Sigma 15 mm 2.8 FE with the metabones adaptor? Perhaps some of our  members tried this combination before and can share their  experience.

Yes that's an interesting question.  Is there a tested fish eye alternative if the luxury of FE-zoom is not really needed?

Regarding the Tokina 10-17 zoom you are making the assumption that the lens will work with the A7R III and an adapter. If you look at the front page of divephotoguide.com you will see that the 10-17 is having compatibility issues with the Nikon Z6/7 cameras, I would want to know it will work before I would buy. Second is that the A7R III in APS-C provides about a 19mp image rather than the 24mp common with most current  APS-C camera bodies. The Sigma is an option that has been tested but I think the most popular combo is the Canon 8-15 with the Metabones adapter. It is the most expensive option but is a bit like having two different lenses. At 15mm it is a full frame fisheye and at 8mm it is a circular fisheye. Not everyone likes the 8mm round image but I have found it fun to use. The port selections remain about the same as long as you buy a port with removable shade. The shade blocks the corners of the 8mm causing bad vignetting.
