Manual focus adaption of Nikonos RS lenses to Sony A7III series

Recommended Posts

Hi all, not sure if this belongs here or in the video forum, but probably both...

Now that I have a general idea about what options there are for using the Nikonos RS lenses on digital bodies, there is one thing that seems to be missing. There have been manual focus adapters made by Gates and Nauticamcam, but exclusively for RED cinema camera's. Other companies offer lens conversions that allow autofocus on modern Nikon camera's, but this is not what I'm after. I would like to get manual focus and iris control, like Gates and Nauticam are offering, but on a Sony A7S III body. So no conversion to the lenses, just an adapter in the housing that allows focus and iris to be set from (large) knobs on the houding (ideally without the use of electronics). Does anyone know of a setup like this?

It is done on Gates housings, have a look at the installation manual to see what is involved:  https://www.gateshousings.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/DEEP-EPIC-SUC-Guide-ADDENDUM-Nikonos-RS-R3-Flat.pdf

As you can see they have developed a custom module that sits in front of the camera that allows the Iris and focus to be controlled using knobs a very complicated and large setup.  To me mechanically it may be possible to implement in something as small as any housing made for the Sony A7 series housing but the space available would likely be prohibitive.  The problem is going to be to get the lens close enough to the sensor to focus you have very little space left to play with. Not saying it can't be done but an order of magnitude more difficult with the space available.

The path of least resistance would have to be to use a 13mm on a nikon body instead of a Sony body and use an established solution.  You might think you could adapt a lens to the body like many Canon lenses are for Sony but of course the metabones doesn't provide any mechanical iris or focus control, which is why people adapt Canon lenses to Sony bodies - all EOS lenses have electronic aperture control - much easier to adapt.

Hi, have you seen this:

NIKONOS ADAPTER FOR NA-A7II/A9 https://www.nauticam.com/products/nikonos-adaptor-for-na-a7ii-a9

Take a look on this article by Scotty Graham: https://www.stevehuffphoto.com/2016/12/05/the-sony-a7r-underwater-with-the-iconic-nikonos-15mm-lens-by-scotty-graham/

Maybe you were after options for the "more recent" autofocus nikonos lenses...

Regards,

Joss

Thanks for the replies, indeed I am after using the more modern RS lenses, but with full manual control. At the moment it looks like Nauticam may come closest to what I'm looking for, so I will investigate that further.
