C-5060 Oylmpus & shutter lag

Recommended Posts

I'm thinking about purchasing an Olympus C5060 but concerned about shutter lag. I saw that Sea & Sea just came out with a DX-5000G camera/housing that has virtually no shutter lag. I'm looking for input-should I be concerned about the shutter lag or will I be happy with the Olympus vs DX-5000G by Sea & Sea.

Shutter is a bit slow. The golden was free swimming and I had to give it a pretty big lead to get it. You could get the hang of it but then again you might miss some of those targets of opportunity that are there and gone forever.

Also, I have sent my C5060 back to Olympus twice. See my posts under "what camera...should I buy" and PT020 issues.

Don't know anything about the DX5000

Not a lot of difference between the 5060 and the 5050 and in fact, for the critical, shutter lag, full auto focus, the 5060 is faster than the 5050.

My guess is you can't do much better than this unless you go to a DSLR camera.

No offense, but it is not the case, that the only thing better in AF and shutter lag is a DSLR.

Sony cams have always had superior AF systems, and the latest ones - the V3 and f828 are really amazing, from both AF speed and final shutter lag. In fact, their final shutter lags are much shorter than any DSLR. Down around 9-12 milliseconds!

Also, the newest nikon - the 8400 has a pretty good AF, and very short shutter lag.

The question remains open, of weather the 8400 AF is much improved, if you turn off the hybrid system, which will not work through even a clear housing.

Even the canon G6 has a much faster final shutter lag than the olys, (and most DSLRs), at 0.077 seconds, but its AF is still being reported as iffy in low light.

Shutter lag is not the only thing...

I own and use a 5060 with a PT020. The housing has some design faults and the camera's autofocus is no good, but I have not found an alternative yet that doesn't have other faults.

If I were to buy a camera today the 5060 would be on my short list. I'm also eagerly waiting to see what housings will appear for the Nikon 8400, and I'm guessing the Sony DSC-P150 (or the V3) with a wide-angle converter could be an alternative.

Some things the 5060 has that will be hard to give up:

1) 8 programmable user settings, including a preset manual focus distance, that can be easily/swiftly switched between.

2) The built-in strobe can be set to slave-triggering mode (reduces "snow", saves battery, generates less heat...).

3) Very good battery life (reduces the risk of flooding and fogging).

4) A decent wide-angle lens. (It's as wide as it can be without using a converter and/or a dome port.)
