What Ikelite port to use with Canon EF-S 10-22mm?

Recommended Posts

Anyone has an idea of what port could be used with the new Canon EF-S 10-22mm? I noted that the 5503 is too short and too narrow. Very eager to get this one in the water!

Marjo, the Nikon 12-24mm uses the 5503.50...the 5503.55 will vignette at 10mm

I'm sure Ike's group will have a recommendation :D

Karl, The Canon camera has a 1.6 crop, so it's "really" 16mm at the wide end.

I think I'll go for the 5503.50 (unlkess someone jumps in here and protests wildly)... I haven't seen a recommendation on Ike's site yet and haven't heard of anyones experiences with this combo, but I figure that the lens is shorter than 4 inches and in case the port is too short, then oh well... I'll get the 5503.55 and will have a good excuse for purchasing a lens to fit the extra 5503.50

When I asked Ikelite about this lens in an email, they stated they had to wait for a local dealer to get one to test. So before my last trip I got the 17-40L instead (I know its not that wide, but I wanted to replace the kit lens anyway), along with the 5503.50. BTW, for the time being I also use this port for the 50mm macro as well, until I figure out what I want to do there.

What port do you use for the 50mm + Lifesize converter??

Hi Dave,

I'm using 5505.45 for the 50mm macro + lifesize converter. It seems a bit roomy, but the corners are sharp, so I am very happy with it.

I just received my Canon EF-S 10-22mm and the lens seemed to work fine with the #5509.28 clamp and gear ring. I placed the clamp and ring onto the lens and then slid the lens into the housing onto the camera. My 5503.5 dome port fit nicely over the lens. To remove the lens one must use a pen or similiar tool to push the lens release. Very inconvenient for battery or card change, but the lens works!

My Ikelite D70 housing has a lens release lever and looking at the Ikelite site picture it looks like your housing has one too.

Yes? No?

Yes the Ikelite Digital Rebel housing has a lens release button. It is the knob directly beneath the zoom knob.

Placement of the lens nodal point within the dome is what's really important. It's good that it fits - that's step one. Step two would be to get close and shoot a grid pattern in the pool. Please post your results.

the nodal point is irrelevant. the lens's entrance pupil (centre of perspective) is the one to use with nowadays retrofocus lens types.

Jolly, how would I determine that the lens entrance pupil is in the right location in the dome port (or reversely that the dome port is the right for the particular lens)?

As I had thought about housing this lens (10-22) my findings were that the entrance pupil is located roughly around 19mm behind the front glass element. But I'm not familiar with Ikelite's dome glasses.

The 5503.50 just came in the mail. Sofar I have established that 1) The lens fits in the port and 2) that the focus gear has just enough room to sit around the zoom ring if I take the "padding" away. It is snug, but has just enough room to turn freely. Since this lens has both zoomring and focus ring, I will have to do autofocus, which should be OK anyway. Oh, and 3) happily, the protective shade does not show up in the viewfinder.

The lens is supposed to focus down to 24 cm. I have not done the calculation on the entry pupil location to find out how close it will actually focus, but sofar I have a hunch that this will be OK.

Now I just have to wait all the way until Saturday to get out on the reef. Torture... BTW, we are having extraordinarily great conditions here on St. Croix in case anyone is thinking of going diving in the USVI. Sunday I dove the North West side if the island and the viz was "infinity". The reefs were sparkling with color and the critters were all out frollicing in the open. Diving is good when you have to shoo away turtles from posing in your pictures.
