Small dome set up for sony ff mirrorless

Hey guys...

 

Since I have time in this pandemic. I start to think of setting up a small dome set up.

 

I want a quick and not big set up. Certainly not for half half photos and maybe also cfwa

 

I do have 16-35 with the smaller 180mm nauticam dome. I wonder if there us anything smaller? Even if its just fixed on 16mm. I am also looking at the new 14mm and not sure if that is a good lens

 

Or go the route of the wwl or wacp..

 

 

Any suggestions?

I know Sony systems are a bit odd for fisheye lenses, but if you want to use a small dome (say 100mm), a fisheye or fisheye and 1.4TC works well - and the later provides CFWA.

If it is a dome that you're looking for, the smallest setup would be the Sigma 15mm lens, with Nauticam N100-120 adapter and a 140mm dome. I have it and it's very compact (you can find Metabones, Sigma MC-11 adapters and the Sigma 15mm used on ebays, i grabbed them there).

That said the highest quality and very similar in terms of compactness (albeit a bit longer) is the Sony 28-60mm with the WWL-1 lens. It is extremely sharp and the rig is very well balanced with the float collar.

I'd go for option 2 unless you specifically want a pure Fisheye lens.

With the 16-35 I certainly wouldn't go smaller than your 180mm dome.  Many regard that as too small for 16mm on a full frame camera, though there seems to be reports that the Sony 16-35 behaves better behind small domes than other brand 16-35 lenses on full frame. Phil I think has posted a couple of test shots with the new 14mm, but you'd be looking at a 230mm dome to go with that.

If you are on Nauticam a fisheye in conjunction with their 140mm dome - either the sigma 15mm or Canon 8-15 adapted is a nice small dome setup, although of course it's a different look to the rectilinear lens and won't suit all photography styles.

Fisheyes have different optics compared to rectilinear lenses so are not so constrained on dome size and you don't need big really big domes and stopping right down to pull the corners into focus.

Daughter is shooting with the WWL-1 here in the Maldives at the moment. Very impressed with the image quality and ease of diving with it. Not just well balanced underwater, but small enough to not be a pain with heavy current, etc. (this coming from someone pushing a WACP-1 through the water on these same dives).
