Weird opaque or black line on top of photos??

Recommended Posts

My Sony A7C with the kit lens photos have a black line or weird looking color on the 1/3 of the top area of the test photos like below.

I think it may be the strobes since the photo with out the strobe looks ok. This happened with or without the CMC1 lens. On the previous dive with the WA WWL-1B lens the photos were fine.

I have 2 inon z330s. Is it sth wrong with my strobes or camera setting causing issue with the strobes? Thanks

Looks, to me, like strobe sync. What shutter speed are you shooting at?

They were at 1/320. Is it too fast for my strobes?

Most likely, as far as I know, the A1 is the only Sony than can sync faster than 1/250th

LIkely, yes. Try at 1/250. You can be topside rather than underwater and the result will be the same. If you get the banding with 1/250, drop the speed to something slower till it goes away. Or, check your camera manual for its maximum sync speed.

Max sync speed of the shutter is quoted at 1/160.  Technically it is too fast for your shutter.  At shutter speeds above 1/160 the second curtain starts to close before the first is fully open.  So the entire sensor is not completely uncovered at any time during the exposure.

This would help clear what the max sync usable is :
