Splicing Ikelite to 3.5mm mono/stereo cable for PocketWizard Interface?

Recommended Posts

I've seen a few people mention that they had made "homemade" DIY enclosures for pocketwizards that they are interfacing with using the 15' ikelite extension, to then fire above the water flash units.  What I can't find is any info on just how you splice from Ikelite cable to stereo/mono cable to trigger the input of the PocketWizard?

Any insight on what wires must connect to what wires for this to work?

Thanks in advance!

This link gives you the pin outs for ikelite strobe cables and shows the pins you need to bridge out to trigger a strobe manually:

I suspect you would want a standard bulkhead installed on your enclosure that you screw the ikelite cable into.  From the pin out you can deduce which cables need to connect to your other cables.

Chris, thanks for the SUPER helpful reply. I was piecing this together as well, using the info on Ikelite's wiring diagrams section of their site... Unfortunately, the bulkheads they sell have wires coming out that don't match the color information of the Ikelite cables... (I'm assuming it's some hotshoe color standard?)

Example: https://www.ikelite.com/products/b1a-ikelite-ics-5-bulkhead-with-connector-replacement

So it still leaves me in a quandry as to which cable coming out of the ikelite bulkhead's backside would be the trigger, and which would be the ground.

Regarding converting this over to a 1/8" mini plug, as best I understand it, the tip gets the audio (which in this case would be the trigger) and the shield gets the ground... Does that sound right?

Thanks again!

If you are wiring to a bulkhead you can use a multimeter to test continuity between the bulkhead pins and the wires not forgetting that the layout is mirrored from bukhead plug to end of cable.
