Using a video light and single strobe on the same camera, same dive

Recommended Posts

hey all,

I have a Olympus EPL10 in an AOI Housing.  Lately I have been using a single Backscatter MF1 (with and without snoot), I have been considering adding my Backscatter MW4300 to the other arm for the change to do some video.  Is it silly to try to do video and photos on the same dive? I know MF1 is not strong enough to double as a video light and the MW4300 is not strong enough to double as a photo light.  Im trying to make the best use of my time underwater as Im not able to get out to dive as often as Im used to (I now have a 6month old little boy, and he is awesome).

If you have a 6-month old it's a miracle you get to dive at all! :yahoo:

This is similar to the question that is often asked about wanting to be able to shoot macro and wide-angle on the same dive. It depends what end results are you satisfied with.

If the aim is to get out, have fun, capture some memories, then sure, why not. But if you want to take serious macro/wide/video, then, in my view, combining different formats is a recipe for muddle. And adding a snoot adds an additional level of complexity and thinking.

The thought process between all the formats is an important element in picture taking or videoing.  It's not easy to make the mental switch between one format and another if want you really want is high-quality, well-composed images. The eyes and brain are looking for different things, different sized creatures - all of which impacts how you explore the reef.

Technically it should be doable. If you are using a strobe that should overpower a video light if you have left the light on. A strobe firing may mess up a scene lit by video light - so I'd turn that off.

But, as I say, it all depends on why you are capturing the videos. Something to show your son? Go for it! Something to win  a competition ? Make some sales? Or have on your wall? Maybe not so much.

I dove with a single strobe and a video light for a long time. When I was shooting stills I positioned the strobe above the housing and the video light to the side as a focus/fill light and it worked great. When shooting video I only used the video light for mostly macro videos as it wasn't powerful enough for wide angel video.

This is kind of what I was thinking of doing.   Making a few images then moving over to video for a little bit.
