Another packing thread...

Recommended Posts

I know there are lots of these threads... And I am fairly sure I have read them all!

I am wondering if anyone can recommend a camera cube or insert that would fit into a standard hand luggage case.  I would ideally like it to fit the following gear.. but open to having some items in the hold:

Nauticam NARX100Vii

Sony RX100

2 x Retra Prime

WWL-C

Some arms floats and batteries.. chargers etc.

I have been looking at this.. which looks like it might do the trick:

I think this is not good to do the transport by itself (I believe it is not strong/secure enough, the handle would not be able to hold all the weight).

But it is a solution do transport the equipment inside a “regular” case with the equipment better protected and organized.

That approach can work well if used inside a backpack or roller case, as long as you’re careful about the dimensions of your gear, dividers, and case.  Check also about padding on the sides, lid, and bottom. I do something similar with above-water gear on family vacations.  But it is a bit of a pain when on the go, since the cube has to go in and out of an external case to access anything.  Another disadvantage is there’s no good option for all the extras like batteries, spare parts, and tools, but you can use a small pouch in one compartment.

If you want a really high quality cube, look at Shimoda Designs.  I have one of their backpack systems and it is top notch.

I use a standard domestic carryon size spinner case that I lined with closed cell foam mat material and then added in the dividers from my think pack backpack - it works quite well.

We always carry on camera gear and one set of cloths.  I use a small, inexpensive hard case that will fit in even the smallest puddle jumper overhead or under the seat.  Wrap housings etc in 3mm wetsuit.  Fits exactly same system your are talking about.  Odd pcs and one set of cloths go in the backpack.

Thanks for all the input. Yes I am hoping for a cube or insert that will fit in a hand luggage spinner.  Not for actual transportation on its own.  Although it may be useful for trips to the pool for practice.

There is a surprising amount of choice in this area..

Asking photographer friends for "bag remnants," or extra bags/pads/inserts/etc they dont use is usually how I build out spare travel cases. Barring that, used ebay/craigslist hard cases and inserts. Maybe I'm paranoid but I don't find soft "camera cube" cases to be that reassuring, either the main bag is a hard case or I get a hard case inside it.

I used these padded dividers for a case a few years ago and they worked very well. I got them on Amazon.

I’ve used mindshift bags for organisation of gear, they provide some padding.

@Sandyzoo2 I am having the same issue. Luckily I have a lighter/smaller set-up (TG6 and housing pt-059, Inon UWL H100 lense + dome and one S&S YS-01 strobe). If you are looking for an insert, I can recommend the f-stop brand. I have the f-stop Navin and it's a great product!

If you don't want to spend a fortune, you can also go DIY like shown or explained in those great threads e.g. thread 1, thread 2 (check @pbalves post in the thread). I am going for a DIY case protector made of a tupperware and some extra foam or neoprene. The rest with go in a padded pouch in my backpack between clothes. This way, you don't have to dedicate a bag to your camera gear. Hope that helps!

Hey - thanks for the suggestion.  I found the choices a little overwhelming so eventually I bought the bag I linked to in my original post.  It *just* about coped with a single strobe, arms and accessories.  The housing a then transported in the Nauticam case that it came in.  It all more or less worked fine for my trip, but now I have 2 strobes - so I might need to rethink for the next trip!

I should add actually, that the WWL-C also had to be trasported in its Nauticam case... so all in all the little padded case I bought was way too small...
