Land travel in Egypt

Recommended Posts

We're heading to southern Egypt (Marsa Alam) next year. We are flying into Cairo first for a day or two and then down to the liveaboard, after which we plan on doing some land touring before heading home. I think flying to Marsa Alam makes sense, but it looks like Egypt air allows only 1 bag and 1 carry-on of 20lbs, is that right? My camera weighs way more than that. Also has anyone used buses or their train system to get around? I'm thinking between Marsa Alam and Aswan or Luxor. TIA

Hi toque

Curiously I was about to post a similar question.

I've organised a liveaboard trip for 24 people next August that leaves from Port Ghalib (the port close to Marsa Alam). A number of the group (me included) will be flying into Cairo with the intention of an internal flight to Marsa and then the 40 mins or so drive to Port Ghalib. An alternative would be to fly to Hurghada and then about a 4 hour drive to Port Ghalib.

Previous experience of this kind of trip with Egypt Air has never thrown up any problems of moving dive gear and cameras - but I've not looked at the latest baggage guidelines - and most things there are "negotiable".

I'm also exploring how best to move a group of people between Port Ghalib, Luxor and Marsa Alam and was going to ask if anyone can recommend a reliable bus/limo operator. I've done this without a problem some years back but my info is out of date.

Thanks. We've found a couple of limo services that friends have used. i also saw domestic flights for trips from Cairo to Luxor or Aswan, but i'm looking for experiences. TimG theres also a long thread in the travel section about airlines cracking down on weight for luggage including carry-on, but I haven't run into that. YET!

Where are you needing them? I think 1 in Luxor and I think the other is in Aswan, but these guys are just private vehicles to takes us to local sights.  I'll get some info from my friend and PM you if you want, but I think you need a bigger service with all those people. He did  say that the best way is to get drivers is from the concierge  where you're staying. If you're looking to get between the port and Luxor or Aswan,  these guys won't do that. Thats why I was trying to find out if anyone had experience with buses or trains systems.

My friends go often with Red Sea Explorer for tech diveaboard and bring with them rebreathers and other stuff...

I know that the preferred airline is Turkish airlines because they have huge discount for extra weight.

Sure, quite understand. I'd need someone to bring a group from Port Ghalib to Luxor. And then a day touring Valley of the Kings. I'd guess about 12 seats.

I've booked transport with Egypt Happy Travel, but always small groups (minibus, rather than full bus). No complaints; everything handled with whatsapp.

Many thanks, waterpixel. I've dropped EHT an email.
