JohnN 1 Posted March 2 On my Canon EF 100mm, there is a switch that sets the minimum focusing distance at either 0.31 m or 0.48 m. Why would I ever want it set to the 0.48m position. For macro isn't closer always better?
TimG 62 Posted March 2 Yep, for macro, closer isn usually better. I don't have the Canon lens but on the Nikkors, you can use the slightly longer minimum distance setting switch to speed up the AF function - that is if you don't need the closest focusing point for a particular shot (or maybe at all!) ChrisRoss 150 Posted March 2 the problem with setting a focus range selector for UW is that you can't change it in the housing. Closer is not always better and you may want to back up a little to shoot a larger subject like a frogfish and find you can't get the framing you want UW. The only reason to set the switch is to limit the amount of hunting the lens does. If hunting doesn't bother you for your typical subjects just leave it on the full range.
