OM-1 not fit for Wide Angle?

Recommended Posts

On Facebook I read the comment from one of Alex workgroup members that the OM-1 does not work for WA. In bright conditions the EVF will dim making it impossible to see any detail in darker subjects. That's indeed a clear disqualification of OM's flagship for under water.

But after seeing this video by Thomas Eisl I started to doubt about the claim.  By default the camera is in Standard Live View mode  and these problems occur. Yet the camera also has a S-OVF (Simulated Optical Viewfinder) Live View mode which "provides a viewing mode similar to an optical viewfinder" and "solves the issue in high dynamic range scenes". The drawback is that it no longer provides a preview of the final image.

I own a EM 5-III and like the image preview in the EVF.  Is the need to switch to S-OVF a large enough drawback to disqualifie the OM-1 for under water photography?

No because you do the same on any mirrorless system.

Unless you are shooting 100% ambient light or video you don't use live view

Not sure how effective is SOVF but I doubt is any different than previous Olympus models

If using S-OVF was a disqualifying feature, nobody would be able to use a DSLR for UW WA.

I have it and only shoot WA. I might not be the best photographer, but somehow I still manage. Compared with my E-M5 II, the ability to shoot in bright conditions and focus in the dark are life-changing.

I've been shooting the OM1 for a review for a month and a half and I assure it is well suited to wide angle live view or not. You can turn off the live view settings so that as you change settings or lighting, the screen does not adjust.

There miust be some difference, the disapointed owner went back to his EM1 II.

Maybe he did not compare the settings

Isn't the OM-01 always in live view, regardless of whether you're using the EVF or the LCD display on the back?

This is where colloquial names and brand naming differences are a problem. Here, LV is referring to the camera applying your shooting settings to the EVF or LCD view, as opposed to S-OVF, which tries to replicate the experience of an OVF (kind of), and does not apply your shooting settings to the view.

The OM-1 has had many software bugs
It is possible that this is just one of them missed so far
