yuchnovicz 0 Posted January 5, 2005 HI All, What are the quality trade offs for the following configurations: dome port with internal WA lens (best? but looses some zoom) flat port with internal WA (OK for macro with WA lens removed but may vignett at widest zoom) Flat port with external WA lens (prone to distortion on edges especially when shooting close- my experience anyway with a sony pc330 and epoque external WA lens?) thx Dan
CamDiver 5 Posted January 10, 2005 Hi there, Dome ports and Flat ports, always the question. I am not a 'Techie' in any way and film pretty much 'old school'. I always learnt to film within the parameters of the camera setup. That being go wide with a dome port WA configuration and go small with a flat port configuration. I film for a living and as such have to put up with the possibility that something massive will happen whilst I'm focussed on the Mandarin fish with a flat port and +4 diopetr setup. Same risk when filming wide. Waiting for those mating mantas when all of a sudden the garden eels start bonking in front of the camera. Such is life. Damn frustrating but there it is. Of all of your suggestions I would prefer to go with flat port with additional external WA adapter. That will allow you, or should allow, to also put on a +2 diopter and take advantage of both worlds. Try it, you'll be surprised. Stay wide and then zoom in on the action if needed. This is great for shooting holiday style videos if you're diving just a few weeks a year and want to get all you can from your dives. Me, I'll be sitting in the channels of Palau with my camera set for specific targets, hoping above hope that the choice pays off. Best of luck. Mark.
