Anyone have a reliable way to attach a ikelite housing SECURELY to a bcd D ring? I have a cp 5000 housing (two handles), and can't find a good place to attach a split ring. I could drill a spot in the camera tray, but if anyone has a better idea... I'm listening. Also, any recommendations on retractors or spiral leashes?

I already have donated one camera setup to davey jones. Would hate to repeat the event. Any suggestions no involving a welder, towing cable and duct tape would be greatly appreciated (I've already thought of those myself)

Sorry for you camera loss. I use a Trident coil lanyard setup. Pretty simple to hook up . Loop the short female end to the handle base in a slip knot fashion (no need to drill anything). The clip on the other end of the lanyard hooks to the BC. This setup allows me to fully extend my arms if necessary. I'm sure there are many other ways to add a little camera security to your dives, but this one is compact and works for me.

See picture for dog snap clip on web strap slipped over handle and then tie wrapped to keep it from sliding too far on handle.

 

When I enter the water I it snapped to my BCD shoulder D ring. At depth I transfer it to a retractor. When I leave the bottom I snap it back to my BCD.

 

Note: Do not use any other kind of snap than a dog snap as some of the other designs can self open e.g. suicide clips.

I also use this coil lanyard to hook up my 8080 and ike hosuing to my BCD, no need to drill the tray really!!

Thanks all. Just needed to know what seems to work for others out there. Like I said, I know what doesn't work. And a rapidly descending camera system is something I can do without seeing again. Paranoia strikes deep!!

I'd want more than the loop of cord depicted in the first picture. Had a buddy and his big dolphin housing for his sony dv cam and hid lights look over the edge of the boat after lowering it on a tag line and watching it slowly drift away. It was the first dive of the day, going down to a wreck with the deck at 110'. My buddy and our guide were both half suited up and watching, and I though "I can catch that". I wasn't geared up, but I could, the swim down was really really easy; then when I had the big yellow box I noted that I had the weight belt on, as the swim back up was much more effort (especially without fins or mask.)

 

So, the moral of the story is, don't dive using one of the cushioned hand lanyards that normally hang on the end of a flashlight (unless you invite me along.)

 

If I was David, I'd look to add a tiewrap to hook the webbing and camera together.
