Rocha 0 Posted March 30, 2005 Apparently there was a leak on Nikon and manuals for the upcoming Nikon D50 and D70s were available for a short time on Nikon's Asia and Europe sites. The manuals are no longer available on Nikon, but the D50 manual is available here. Both are 6 megapixel cameras, and apparently the D70s has no significant improvement over the D70. UWPhotoTech 0 Posted March 30, 2005 Thanks for this posting this! I downloaded the manual for the D50, it's a few millimeters smaller in all directions than the D70. The site lists an 18-55 Kit lens, hopefully this will be priced to compete with the Canon Digital Rebel 300D. I found a post online regarding the D70s, same camera upgraded to 8MP. TuriLed 2 Posted March 30, 2005 any chance for a bigger viewfinder on the D70s ? :-P
Jolly 3 Posted March 30, 2005 D70s data available anywhere? leaked manual available as well? so far D50 viewfinder is the same size: same sensor size also covered by 95% and magnified by .75 . This menas D50 kind a entrance level camera (SD cards?) and D70s an 8MP upgrade to the D70? I think they really getting late on their D100 upgrade. Rocha 0 Posted March 30, 2005 I don't know much about the D70s, but according to the manual (which I can't find online anymore), it will still be 6 megapixel, not 8. The viewfinder will be the same, but the LCD will be slightly larger (2 as opposed to 1.8'').
UWPhotoTech 0 Posted March 30, 2005 I think your probably right, I just heard from a friend at Nikon. He said the D70s will be the same image sensor with Wireless Transmission capability and a larger LCD screen.
Rocha 0 Posted March 30, 2005 Did your friend tell you anything about the D200 (or D80, D90, or whatever the D100 replacement will be called)?
scubag 0 Posted March 30, 2005 There was a photo on www.gizmodo.com of the D50, but I don't understand why they would do a chrome SLR. Canon proved that no one wants a silver camera. Perhaps it's a fake.
UWPhotoTech 0 Posted March 30, 2005 Did your friend tell you anything about the D200 (or D80, D90, or whatever the D100 replacement will be called)? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> My contacts at Nikon are all in the service end of the business, so they're the last to hear things. No word at all on a D80, D90, D200 or whatever it will be called. I learned a good method to determine what's coming though, search for US Trademark registrations for the registration of product names. The Nikon D2X name was registered about six months before the product announcement.
Jolly 3 Posted March 30, 2005 Before I'll go for a 1Ds I still hope Canon is going to build the right camera for me. Where can I look up if some kind of patent product name called Canon 3D, 7D or whatever is registered? thanks Julian
Rocha 0 Posted March 30, 2005 Hi Julian, here is how I checked the patent site for the Nikon info: I just searched for trademark on google and when on US trademark site I searched for all trademarks filled by Nikon, the D50 has been there since mid-february. I tried Canon too, but there was a problem, Canon is such a big company that they have lots and lots more registered trademarks than Nikon, so I didn't have the patience to browse through them all looking for a 30D or 2D or something. shark8matt 0 Posted March 31, 2005 Any word on whether either of these updates will have the faster AF of the D2X or will they make do with the ones of their predecessors? regards... - MP
Rocha 0 Posted March 31, 2005 No, the D70s will be exactly the same as the D70, except for the slightly larger LCD (and one or two other modifications not related to AF or anything important to us). The D50 will have the same AF as the D70 and D70s (CAM900).
markprior 0 Posted March 31, 2005 It seems to me that the primary purpose behind introducing the D70s is not to provide a consumer upgrade but to reduce cost of manufacture and ensure as much synergy with the D50 production line as possible. The key questions for us are will any buttons move on the D70s and will the D50 fit in a D70 housing ? It is interesting that the D50 is using SD cards instead of CF. This should allow it to be smaller if they choose. Nikon will now have four production cameras filling the following niches: High Res Pro - D2X Pro Sports - D2Hs Mid-Range Consumer SLR - D70 Low End SLR - D50 I am hoping they will add something between the D70 and D2H soon. D200 ? Although given their slow history of development I am not holding my breath for this year.
Lndr 0 Posted April 5, 2005 be warned > its big (MB) ... D70s manual
UWPhotoTech 0 Posted April 5, 2005 Good News! Although the LCD is larger on the D70s the camera's dimensions are the same as the D70 and there does not appear to be any changes in button locations. So current D70 housings should work with the D70s.
