bvanant 191 Posted April 10, 2005 Anyone using the Inon Ringflash. I use a ringflash in the studio, it should be quite neat for some super macro stuff but before shelling out $1500 bucks or so, I was wondering if anyone has some ideas. thanks Bill
Photec 5 Posted April 10, 2005 Hi, I have been using my Inon quad flash for several years, first with film and now with a D100. It is great piece of kit for macro - if you can see your subject in the VF then you can light it! Depending on the camera (digital) you are using you may have a problem controling the power of the unit - it has three power levels which may not reduce the light output enough at say 200ASA equivalent as the unit is so close to the subject. I use mine with a LMI Titan with the ROC ocntrol (one of the main reasons for choosing this housing) and so I have no problem. Another way around this is to add a strong diffuser. With film on TTL it never missed a beat. Hope that helps. Mark Webster www.photec.co.uk D100, LMI Titan.
anny 0 Posted April 10, 2005 Its the best tool in the bag. Is using it with film and digital (D70). Would love to have iTTL support but you can do with manual to. I use ND filters cut and taped to the flash itself. -1 and -3 steps has been used. Regards Anders Nygren www.vattenbilder.com
Tom_Kline 141 Posted April 10, 2005 Apparently it will not fit certain ports, specifically those of Seacam. Has anyone been successful at use the ring flash on a Seacam housing? Maybe they will re-design it with iTTL and a larger ID. Tom
pmooney 6 Posted April 10, 2005 Mark, I am a keen user of the Titan, and have often considered the ringflash solution. Could you shoot me a few shots and perhaps a little advise / info about your setup. Best Peter Mooney Scubapix.com
bdickson 0 Posted April 10, 2005 I use the Inon Ringflash with my Aquatica S2 housing. I agree with the previous comments, its the most useful tool in my box. The port size is a problem though. I got around it by buying a custom made Sea&Sea port from Ocean Optics in London England, and grafting it to an Aquatica extension ring using marine grade epoxy. I believe there is also a US company who will make custom ports. Wetpixeler Lindai had one made I think. Are you following this thread, Linda? Another option is to use a conventional strobe arm and hang the ring directly in front of the port. With 1.5 crop ratio digitals this does not cause vignetting and has the added advantage that the strobe can be swung away and used as a conventional strobe. The ringflash has a mounting point for a standard Sea&Sea strobe adapter. Bruce
lindai 1 Posted April 10, 2005 Yes, I had a custom port made to use the ring flash with my Sea and Sea housing. Peter Ladell in UK made it, and did a very professional job. The port steps down from the large opening in the S & S housing, to the size required for the ring strobe, and I have used it frequently with absolutely no problems. If you would like contact information for Peter, or more information, contact me directly. (By the way, I am in the US and had Peter make the port, to fit the ring strobe and my housing, all done remotely, and the communications were great, delivered on time, no problems at all.) I really like the ring strobe for macro and fish faces. I have a Fuji S2 and both the TTL and the focus light work with my setup, which is a great advantage. Linda I. Photec 5 Posted April 11, 2005 Hi Peter, My flash is mounted on a custom port made by Ken Sullivan here in the UK (www.pops.co.uk). Peter Ladell has also been mentioned and both these guys are excellent engineers who will make most bespoke housing parts - we are fortunate here! My port was originally made for a Subal housing so I use the Titan adaptor ring - but you could have a port made to fit directly with the Titan. The ROC works perfectly with the quad - I rarely need more than half power even when at minimum focus and minimum aperture. I have tried to add a couple of quick pics without success (many of the macro pics on my website are using the quad) - if you need more specific information please email me (markwebster@photec.co.uk) as I leave for Angola for a month today (oil business).
