PRC 2 Posted April 26, 2005 A couple of recent posts have mentioned removing light scratches from PC ports with polish. What polish and technique is used - I hesitate to use the word ' recommended ' as I doubt that it is !
John Bantin 101 Posted April 26, 2005 Hey, I know the answer to this one! If you are as clumsy as I am with a big PC dome port you certainly get to practise polishing a lot! I use the finest wet 'n dry carborumdum paper as used by autopaint-shops. I gently polish the area of the scratch until it is evened out. That leaves it almost opaque and you start to panic the first time, asking "What have I done?" Then you take some proprietory cotton wadding silver polish such as Silvo or Duraglit (in the UK) and polish the area as if your life depended on it. It brings it up beautifully clear again. I have spent many hours in my cabin polishing my port! But it works.
MikeVeitch 0 Posted April 26, 2005 Many hours in your cabin polishing your what??!!! Can you say that in public? I have also been told that helicopter "glass" polish works great as well. Off to polish my port... Mike
PRC 2 Posted April 26, 2005 Hi John, know what you mean about finding one you can answer ! Just dont look at _ANY_ of the pic's that Alex bloke has taken and posted - I darn nigh gave this stuff up to take up stamp collecting..... Wet and dry + duraglit - oh my, that does sound kind of scary - maybe I will wait a while longer and collect a few more scratches before I go down this road. Thanks, Paul C
kdietz 0 Posted April 26, 2005 If you get some minor scratches while on a dive trip, "paste" toothpaste will get them out....when you get home, use an acrylic polish to really clean it up Karl
Peter Schulz 1 Posted April 26, 2005 I have used Novus acrylic polish. http://www.novuspolish.com/ I bought the kit with the three grades i.e. light, medium, and heavy duty. Only the heavy duty worked in that the others were way too slow/gentle. In fact, even the heavy duty grade is slow going so I plan to try auto paint compound followed by Novus if needed. james 0 Posted April 26, 2005 Jimmy was using Novus on the Shear Water and it worked - but was slow. I've got an upcoming article I'm working on about this topic - probably get it finished some time next week. Cheers James
pmooney 6 Posted April 26, 2005 i have used a combination of toothpaste , then Jiff ( cream cleanser ) and finished with brasso (metal polish ). Always a slow process - but what price can you put on saving a trip.......

fdog 3 Posted April 27, 2005 You would not believe the abuse I've seen removed by this...windscreens that you could not see through. Small stuff simple scratches, about 15 minutes to remove. It's been worth every every penny for me. All the best, James
kriptap2 0 Posted April 28, 2005 A friend took his to his watch dealer, he polished it out just like he does with scraches on expensive waches.
Lionfish43 0 Posted April 28, 2005 Here's a second plug for micro-surface products. I use the NC 78 kit. After our recent Bahamas shark trip I had several pretty good scratches on my 8" dome. It takes a little bit of time and elbow grease but if you follow the directions in the kit you'll end up with a brend new looking dome. Good stuff.
