Purchasing D2X-advice pls

Recommended Posts

Has anyone bought a D2X or anything else from the advertisers from Wetpixel. Not the well known ones but those on the side of posts that appear to be too low to be true. The prices if true are less then half that of B&H.

Hi,

I would stay away from any D2x that is being sold for less than $4,700, which is the lowest price that I've seen, and what I paid for mine. Anything cheaper than that will probably be a scam. Also, make sure you buy from a Nikon authorized dealer and get Nikon USA warranty. There seems to be a lot less focus problems lately, but you never know, and you will have a hard time servicing your camera if it is not USA.

Agree with the authorized dealer and US warranty-they are a must. So far I called three of the dealers who advertize here: 1 not authorized;1 grey market and other says authorized and US warranty-price approx. 3900.

There are Wetpixel advertisers and then there are Google Ads. There is a big difference.

Every reputable dealer in the U.S. I can vouch for sells the camera at around $4995. Anything more than $100 less than this is highly questionable.

Considering that there are still waiting lists for D2x cameras at full price then I would be very suspicious of selling one for less than this.

Also when I got my camera (back in February) my dealer gave me a discount. They later told me that this got them in big trouble with Nikon UK who said that they would not give them any more D2X cameras if they discount them before the waiting lists have been honoured. The dealer was very surprised by this as the dealer discounting a product does not make any difference to how much the manufacturer makes per unit.

In anycase a reason to be suspicious of cheap cameras.

You assumed correctly Tiger that the cheap prices are from the google ads. One of then thou claims to be an authorized dealer with US warranty(expresscameras.com). Their price of 3849 is 1150 less then B&H.

Who is probably going to say they are out of stock of the camera unless you buy >$1,150 in accessories...like the battery, the charger, the viewfinder, the camera strap... All stuff that the camera is supposed to come with.

James is correct. These crooks will often sell you the camera (or pretend they will) and then try to sell you the items that normally come with the camera from reputable dealers. I played with a scammer one time and he simply got tuckerd out by my questions and hung up.

Buyer beware. These bastards will take your money and run.

FWIW, I bought my D2X for $4699 from Roberts Imaging in Indiana. They have a rating of 10.0 at resellerratings.com. And I did not need to buy any accessories...

Also, the camera was part of a batch (not just from Roberts) that seemed to have some lockup flaws, and they took care of replacing my camera and getting the original shipped back, with no hesitation whatsoever. I had the replacement within two days, and it works perfectly.

I also bought mine from Roberts, they are great.

Linda, your website and photos are really nice!

Ok-If the deal is too good to be true then it isn't a deal.

Robert's or B&H it is.

Well in Japan the normal price for a D2X is $4200. In malaysia, I picked one up for a friend for $4100. Seems Nikon deals hard on cameras in asia but not in the US, and vice versa for Canon.

I think I saw somewhere on Nikonians that the Philippines authorized Nikon dealer had a D2X listed for something like $3900 or something like that. In Thailand, the retail price was $5000 although a few of us did get a bit of discount from the dealer. However they did not offer the same discounted price when other friends wanted to buy one.

Here are some photo's of the wonderful discount NYC camera stores

Is this where you want to buy a camera?

I think your being a little hard on what I believe to be reputable companies. Well maybe not all of them but certainly some of them.

Don’t judge a book by it’s cover. I was born and raised in New York before I move to Florida. I know some of the worst looking restaurants in little Italy serve the best food.

If their a Nikon dealer I wouldn’t worry to much about the way the building or the store front looks. Take a look at the rest of the old business area, it doesn’t look any better.

I have bought 3 of these beauties from 3 different countires.

The prices paid were spread from bargain to MAP.

The first was from a Nikon Dealer in Japan ( yodobashi ) 498000 Yen - there were none available in Australia ( the next 3 deliveries is still fully committed ) and I just had to have one , the second was purchased in Hong Kong ( Rainbow Photographic in Kowloon ) 33,000 HK dollars - it was an opportunistic purchase at a great price.

and one this week from Backscatter in Monterey $4995.00 USD

All will have different levels of support and warranty conditions due to the purchase points , all of which is understood and accepted.

The best advice would be to purchase a unit from an authorised dealer ( Wetpixel supporter ) that is in your market to ensure the support and service you need.

I think it's a key comment about the level of support and warranty, depending on the source, and the need to understand and accept that. I was very glad to have excellent service when I needed to exchange the camera due to a camera flaw. Others may well be more tolerant of a lower service level, international returns, or having to deal with Nikon for warranty issues directly (and the time that requires). It's a level of risk that we all choose for ourselves for the odd occasion where there's a problem.

(Luiz, thanks for your kind comments about my website!)

Hi,

Take this how you wish, but I would also read the fine print of many of these sites. When looking on my own, I found one of these online scam artists that claimed to be an authorized Nikon dealer. I say scam artist because unless you dug far enough into their site, they would not tell you that - even if the camera was shipped by them and it was defective, damaged, or in perfectly great condition, and even if you never even opened the box, you had 10 days to return it and irregardless if you got it back to them via fed-ex in time - all returns would be charged a 20% restocking fee and you eat the shipping both ways. YOu had 10days from time of order, and there was no guarantee of when the camera would ship. I called Nikon, they were indeed a dealer, Nikon would not make any comments on how that particular site does business, but suggested that there are other options out there. (Hint Hint).

As of now, I am extremely happy to have purchased my gear from a local authorized dealer who I can walk into their professional store and get help any time I need it. They understood how the grey market is hurting their honest business, and they were also kind enough to offer a small discount to help bring the purchase into a level playing field. Full warranty. I appreciate their service, they appreciate my business, and I understand that running elsewhere to save some money isnt going to keep the reputable sources in business who are tking risk and costs of operation in order to help me and earn customers.

Besides, I have the camera, I'm using it, playing, learning so much, enjoying it, impressing my friends all while others keep searching for the "best deal" and aren't even in the game yet...

Get going I say...life's too short.

I completely echo Paquito's comments. There is more to buying a camera than getting the best deal.

Having a good relationship with a pro dealer has many additional benefits and is the best investment long term. With the D2x it got me this camera on the 25th February.

Alex,

Surely you meant to say " best price " rather than best deal !

Best deal includes the knowledge that the price paid either includes service , warranty , help , advice , tips , or if it was the unupgradable "NO SERVICE & SUPPORT" best price that includes nothing except what comes in the box !

Sometimes the only way to get a "must have" item is to source it outside of normal channel's.

This always comes at a cost.

Peter

Some people though don't live close to a dealer and we have to look for a good deal on the internet. My community doesn't stock the latest and the greatest. Plus in this day and age there is no way I am going to pay a lot more than what I can get a product from a respected authorized online seller. Just doesn't make good business sense to me.

Tony-

I think the problem is who is a respected authorized online seller and who isn't.
