Singapore Airlines

Recommended Posts

Has anyone travelled on Singapore Airlines to Bali lately? Their carryon weight is 11lbs. How strict have they been??

I may start adding a number of pockets to my clothing.

Hi Marli,

I've never traveled on Singapore, but I did travel on countless airlines, and I never had my carry-on checked for weight. I traveled to Bali last month with EVA Air and they didn't check. And especially now, with all the security, there is simply no time to check at the gate. I don't think you should worry about it.

I travelled them to Singapore and had no issues with carryons.

In December, EVA Airlines made it difficult for me to travel with me 14kg carry-on. I had to purchase a 2nd cheap bag, and separate my single carry-on into two 7kg bags. I kid you not. Once I received my ticket, I re-packed into 1 bag and went through security.

lame.

In May when we went to Indonesia on Singapore Air they took one look at Randy's carry on roller bag and asked to weigh it...at SFO. We had to ask for one of our checked bags back and fill it up a little more.

But that was the only time on the trip that happened.

I don't think the issue will be Singapore Airlines but the staff/handling agent who process for SIA at the airport that you board at.

I use SIA quite a bit and have never had a problem with them (boarding at BKK and SIN) for carry on or baggage at those airports. Indeed I have witnessed another board member repeatedly carrying 3 carry ons all weighing over 10kgs with no problems at all on coach SIA.

That sucks, I didn't like them for other reasons, they put me in a middle seat, and I was at the airport 3 and 1/2 hours before the flight. I won't fly with them again, they were cheap, but the service onboard sucks. But when I checked in at LAX they didn't even looked at my carry-on, which weighed more than 10kg.

And I agree, the person behind the counter at the time of check in is the one to blame. Try to "hide" your carry-on close to you, or better yet, between you and the counter. I do that when I am taking flights with small planes and they never asked to weigh my carry-on.

Also, go to the gate early and be one of the first to get onboard. If you're late (or later than the other passengers) and there is no room for your carry-on on the overhead bin, they will put it down below.

I travelled with Singapore back in 2004 and had 2 carry-ons. One Tamrac fotobackpack and a Storm roller case, in total probably more than 25 kg. I usually hide the roller case at check-in or even better leave it at a friend or in the car during check-in and fetch it afterwards B). They and other airlines never gave me troubles this way...

Hi Scubamarli,

I was wondering the same thing. My wife boards Singapore air next week and I board Malaysia air. Both have the 11 lb rule. We each have one roller (within their size limit) that weighs 42 pounds, and a laptop bag that weighs 30 lbs. Both are well within the size limit, so I need to make sure they are not handled by the crew. I have purchased a camera vest that will pull out 25 lbs of lenses from the carry-on, and got my wife one too. The trick is to make sure you pack well in case they make you check any of your carry-ons. I am more concerned about me because I have to go to Taipai, Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta then Manado....three plane changes in all so I am worried I will lose or have stolen my checked goodies. That's why I packed as much of the valuable camera gear as possible as carry-on. Crossing my fingers I don't get wacked.

Sooo, I guess I better get that photo vest!

The agent I spoke with basically had a who cares that you're a diver and a photographer. We won't be responsible for valuables if you check them, but you better declare what you have and pay extra for us to check it. EVA, by the way, states they have scales at the gate. (!) Next time it's Cathay, which at least makes weight concessions for sports gear (I read this as golf clubs) and camera gear.

Cheers,

Marli

Wow... I posted the exact same question on scubaboard. I recieved about the same responses too. I guess it's all in how non-chalant you can be combined with a little luck.

On SQ flights, the person at the ticket counter is the only one I've ever had ask me (at Newark). When she told me about it, she just added that I might be a bit more careful the next time and let me go on my way without any further hassle. If you're connecting from a domestic flight it shouldn't be an issue as you'll never see an SQ ticket agent. If Continental had been able to check my bag all the way through onto Silk Air I never would have even seen an SQ ticket counter agent in Newark (I was forced to re-check bags onto the SQ flight) . . .

Just be happy you're not connecting from a domestic flight with a 50lb per checked baf weight limit. Even though SQ allows 70lb per bag, the domestic airline getting me to Newark charges per bag for the extra weight . . .

I did a quick round-trip from Bali to Singapore and back on SQ at the beginning of the year. As usual (or perhaps a bit more than usual), I was doing a lot of shopping in Singapore, and was pushing the checked luggage allowance a little, and I was certainly carrying plenty of carry-on too, with no problems.

The one airline to watch out for flying Singapore to Bali is Air Asia. Nice airline, cheap basic price on all seats, but the luggage limits are ruinously tight, and if you go over, you pay through the nose.

Just did a round trip to Bali on SQ / Silkair, with a 16kg camera carry on, a 30kg housing suitcase, and 15kg dive bag, and didn't get as much as a raised eyebrow :)

Just lucky I guess...

I have flown Singapore airlines at least 10-15 times over the last 10 years and the only problem I had was at check in at LAX, they saw how many check ins a friend and I had and were telling me we couldn't do it. I just said I was giving a bag to

a friend at the curb and would only have one each when we go to the plane, they seemed to be ok with that. From then on, I hide the carryons so the counter people don't see it. If in a group, one person takes all the carryons and moves far away from the check in counter.

Then when up at the gate, there is so much confusion with duty free, kids boarding, etc that I put the roller on the side opposite the person taking the ticket, never look the people standing just beyond the ticket taker in the eye and keep on moving. I usually have one on my back and a roller.

I have never had to check a carry on at the gate. Look lanchalot (sp), don't look

anyone in the eye except the ticket taker at the gate and engage them in a little conversation and they can't see what is on your opposite side.

Hope that helps.

Terry

Another great tip when being hassled about heavy carry-on (like containing camera equipment): take out the camera with your heaviest lens on it (and flashunit) and put it around your neck.

Regulations allow you to bring a camera apart from you carry-on. I fly a lot and I have to pull this trick about 3-4 time a year (most often with the low-cost carriers though).

The people behind the check-in are only doing their job and quite often they have to nag about heavy carry-on beacuase that's what their bosses tell them. This way it all fits regulations: they are happy and you are happy (and who cares that, straight after check-in, you put back the camera?). :D

Just took SQ 147 to Singapore yesterday. They never hassled me for carrying 2 carry on bags(11kg and 8kg) plus housing(10kg) in hand. But I'm a PPS member and they only ever hassled me once in LA because the flight was completely full, all the way to 1st class.

Shouldn't be too much of a problem in low season though.

My wife used them to go to Lembeh. She hauled on two 40 pound carry-ons with no problem.
