Nikon D200 imminent

Recommended Posts

There is a lot of discussion among various photography forums regarding a PDF supposedly leaked from Nikon with the D200 specs. I've never seen it, but among other things it lists the D200 as having the same sensor as the D2x. It will be a really great camera if this is true (like the F100 was compared to the F5). Here is a link with detailed specs:

from the specs this looks like a superb competetion to the (true?) 5D, especially if they charge less to meet the 100D's price class. I envy you Nikon guys, simply DX for all, no EF / EF-S / 1.3 hassle when switching bodies.

Hi Julian, I like the DX format and invested big on it (I just bought 10.5 and 17-55 lenses). If there is one thing that Nikon does is try not to mess with the lens format too much (see the F mount). About the rumors, I don't know if either camera will really be real, but both look *very* good on paper.

Probably wont look like any of them in the end ;) , meanwhile I just bought a poor man version of the D2x, the D2h, at least I can start using the housing and when I have somebody to buy one of my kidney I can upgrade :D Amen to Nikon and the stabillity the offer its user, they are slow to come out but long lasting.

Hi Luiz,

that's true. On the other hand fullframe has its advantages too and no hassle so far if you went with the 1D Series including no body change until now. But Canon never made clear from the beginning where the journey would end in the sub 1D lineup.

In the beginning, the guess was fullframe for lower end cameras too. Then the 300D came along with the cheapish EF-S kit lens. But this was considered as an exception. With the 20D and more EF-S lenses it seemed to be clear that FF is limited to the 1Ds and 10D,D60 etc. were obsolete due to lens choice (no short mirror for EF-S). And now we seem to have a sub 1Ds FF camera line ... . This all wasn't exactly Canon's finest hour on honest sensor size and lens mount policy. I hope the 5D finally ends this dilemma for me, if it is real ;)

But disregard my post, this is a D200 thread :D

@Jean

Are you sure the D200 will fit into a D100 housing? B)

This looks very dubious to me. I do think that there is a good chance that the D200 will have the D2X sensor. But this webpage seems the sad work of a Nikon-lover wanting to answer the 5D PDF and create his (its not going to be a her) dream camera.

Alex

p.s. If I were and Canon UW shooter and not using a 1dS Mk2 I would rather Canon made a EFS fisheye than a FF camera. FF digital does cause problems with corners on wide angle (particular Canon's zooms). It would be cheaper too.

Julian, I have no F@#$*& idea ;) , the underwater photographer is nothing but a grain of sand on the grand beach of the photography market. I doubt it will be "standard" size, but surely hope it is in the D100 kind of size. That would make many of the manufacturer happy and most important help keep the price at a reasonable level; it is not that the manufacturer wants to clean your pocket, but designing and producing housing is a costly affair. Starting from the ground up well ... $$$$ it is better when you can readapt some tooling to the business at end, less expense for us manufacturer = less expense to you consumer. In the end, we want the same thing as you people, pay the bills, get some decent food and board and some free time to go diving :D. but hey I'm going all philosophical here, I just want the bloody camera to be out ASAP, so everybody can get to work on the new project and all you people can start putting pressure on us as when, how much, how heavy, how light, what color ... ;)

I don't think Canon/Sigma FF fisheyes on FF are a problem as their not bad at all. Rather the wideangle zooms and sub 20mm primes (don't like this old poor and overpriced Canon 14mm). But I don't expect to much high end EF-S glass if the 5D is real. And I can not see fast EF-S wideangle primes on the horizon.

Oh, man...I sure hope it's true and soon! I'd make Jean, Norma & Blake very happy because I've already told them the D2X is too big, too heavy for me to handle and I won't upgrade til the D200 is available! ;)

This looks very dubious to me.

I no longer believe it either. I did some searches and it turns out that only one person afirms that he saw the leaked PDF, and there are no copies of this PDF anywhere. Too good to be true?

Sigh...I wish they'd just make an announcement. I don't really want to drop the cash on the D2X but I desperately want to upgrade from the D100 and eventually I'll just have to pull the trigger.

Thanks for the kind words Karl. I'm a better graphic designer than photographer. :)

btw. I've taken the time to explore the photos on your excellent site more than once. Inspiring portfolio!

Well, no D200 on sep/01, but here is some interesting news:

Technical director of the company Carlos Ormazabal said its specs are different than those circulating on the net. No name was said but according to Ormazabal the new model is a PRO level camera and it will be a "bomb".

LOL, how light or heavy! not an issue. Just keep the same port disign!

What I would like to see is a ( big Eye ) viewfinder like you used on the old A80. I was happy to see that you went back to the old hangle design on the D70 housing I tested for Tim Rock.

Color, how about uncoated aluminum!

I visited my camera guy yesterday. It was his last day working at the camera shop before going to work for himself. The last thing he was doing was ordering himself a D200. Says it will be a 10 mp sensor and a new body between that of the D70 and that of the D2X.

The Nikon rep was standing behind him as he was doing this.

I know nothing that I didn't write above. I got the impression the camera would be announced before Thanksgiving.

Yes Dave, the rumors are flying all over the place. I think the announcement will be in mid to late November. AF should be similar to the D2x (if not the same), but no high speed crop, and as you said with a 10.X mp sensor. Hopefully a digital F100.

I went to the Photo Plus Expo in NYC because we got a tip :) that the D200 would be announced there. Needless to say that did not happen! The latest buzz is that the Nikon sales staff is being called in for a meeting on November 7th. Perhaps this is it! :(

In a french mag (last week edition) it was said that they will officialy present it next month... for sure !

Latest technical data are : 10,4 Mpx - ISO 100 à 1600 - 1.5x - 5 fps - 30s to 1/8000s - flash sync 1/500sec - 11 area MultiCAM1400 AF (not the same as the D2/F6) !

I hope it's true...

flash sync 1/500sec

If that is the case then flash synch will be most probably possible at all speeds (unofficially - like the D70), because it means it will be using an electronic shutter at higher shutter speeds.

There will be as well a new Nikkor 10-24/f2.8 AF-S ED DX (to replace the 12-24) and a 16-70/f4 AF-S ED VR DX!

If this all is true I'll have an other information! Let's wait... and see... B)
