Oly 5060 or 7070

Recommended Posts

How big is the difference?

Is image quality improved - can you see the difference (mainly interested in improved dynamic range)?

Is the 7070 AF better (or worse) than the 5060?

Please, only answer if you've actually used both.

Thank you, /Anders

The C-7070WZ has been discontinued, but you can still get it in some stores.

The "problem" is that Olympus does not offer a replacement model - it seems the C-?0?0 line of cameras has come to an end. It's either a move down to SP-350/310 or a move up to E-300 (in terms of Olympus cameras).

...also I have a rather heavy investment in accessories that fit the PT-020 and PT-027 housings.

The sensor is the main difference between the 5060 and 7070 models. I don't feel a need to get the extra 2MP, but if I get significantly less noise and better dynamic range I'd dlike the 7070.

Hello again!

The main difference seems to be:

1) Definately more detail in the pictures.

2) More accurate AF (not a lot faster though)

Olympus sent me a 7070 to replace a bad 5060.

Have not had it U/W yet. Like it dry, mostly for the user interface. It's menus are much easier to navigate and much more logical. It also has two underwater modes built in. Don't know how they work.

Haven't noticed much difference in autofocus or quality of pics other than that inherent to the additional megapixels.

Current Ikelite housings include a thin bumper installed in front of the camera hand grip for correct C-7070 spacing. A thicker bumper to add for use with the C-5060 is included.

Older #6130.61 housings for the Olympus C-5060 require simply removing the thick rubber bumper in front of the camera handle and replacing with a thinner piece which can be obtained no charge by e-mailing us.

I've used both - If you already have a good 5060, I would not consider the 7070 a big upgrade (although if buying new, would go with a 7070). The additional pixels are nice to allow cropping for better composition; but I saw no major improvement in picture quality, and actually thought the autofocus was better on the 5060; especially in low light.

If you get a 7070, use a focus light. I did like the TTL on both camera's with the Ike housing; really works well for macro and closeup wide angle.

bversteegh,

What's a focus light?

Rest of topic:

After using my 7070 for about a month both above and below the surface, I've got to say I think the 5060 auto focus was better. Sometimes takes a couple-three tries to get the 7070 to focus on the object or place I want it to focus on.
