What is the best card reader to buy?

Recommended Posts

I'm looking for a first hand recommendation for a CF card reader. I'm growing tired of hooking my camera up to my computer to download images.

Thank you in advance for any advice.

Hi Al,

I really like to have a reader because I don't have to remove my camera from the housing to take the card out, while I have to remove it if I want to connect it to the computer. I have a Sandisk (model #SDDR-92), and I like it a lot. Never gave me any trouble, it is fast (USB 2.0), small, light and reliable. A friend of mine had a smaller one, but I can't remember what brand was it.

Hi Al,

If it's for a laptop, then I recommend a Cardbus type of PC card adapter. I have one by Aska (sold by Belkin here in the states I think) and it's a screamer.

As for USB2 card readers, just get one that is small and plugs into the USB port. IMO, they are all pretty much the same, as long as they are really USB2.

Cheers

James

I have a "Dazzle" made by the Zio corporation that accepts both the microdrive and the compact flash cards. I connect it to my laptop and desk top via a USB cable. I also have the "Dazzle" compact flash adapter that I can slip right into my laptop. Both work great.

I second the Delkin Cardbus PC card reader. (it's not a Belkin). I have a CF one and a 5-in-1. Fits in the PC card slots, and is always there for you.

I have a small, cheapie 12-in-1 (or whatever) USB2 backup.

Al,

If your computer has a firewire bus IE 1394, Sandisk makes a high speed card reader that works great, and is as fast or faster than the USB 2.0 readers

As I do not posses a laptop, but do have the firewire bus, the Sandisk sounds like the way to go.

Since I never manage to get around to editing my home movies...at least the firewire will finally get utilized in some manner.

Thanks a lot Doug.

I use a Lexar firewire reader that has never given me problems. Firewire 400 is clearly faster than USB 2.0 despite the specs saying USB 2.0 is faster.

Good to know! I never tested them side by side.
