james 0 Posted September 16, 2005 Hi Folks, We finally got around to posting some of Sarah's favorite photos from Bali. She was using a Canon 20D Ikelite housing and Ikelite strobes and shooting the 50mm and 100mm macro lenses. With the 20D’s 1.6x crop factor, 100mm lens, and “Woody’s†diopter she was able to get some awesome high-magnification photos. One thing that was nice about the Ikelite setup was that with 2 8" buoyancy arms, and an Ultralight handle setup, the rig was almost completely neutral. Sarah was comfortable with using the * button and shooting manual focus with the 100mm lens - which I thought was great. The TTL was a really nice feature for her to have, so she could concentrate on finding critters, focusing, and composition. underh2o 0 Posted September 16, 2005 Looks like Sarah got some great images. So when is Sarah going to start entering the HUPS monthly contests? That reminds me, I guess you will have to upgrade to a family membership!
Lionfish43 0 Posted September 16, 2005 Wow, fantastic!! I like a number of the shots on the webpage better than the ones you've posted here. The puffer, razorfish, crinoid shrimp and many others. Some of the WA's are very nice as well. You guys are setting youself up for some serious conflicts. I hope you're both very supportive and non-competitive....ha, ha, ha, ha
herbko 0 Posted September 16, 2005 Great shots Sarah! Especially getting both H shrimps in focus. Could use a better model on the WA shot.

dhaas 27 Posted September 18, 2005 I think Sarah's photos point out one very important skill very few digital photographers possess or practice....Editing.....Ability to shoot hundreds to thousands of images makes it almost impossible to determine the best of the best to post process into fantastic images. Continual editing down to images you're proud to show should be a prime goal of all photographers. I CAN relate if it's YOUR best Pygmy seahorse photo, then yes, keep it. But editing should still be a part of the workflow. I also have to say that how women view their environments, usually with a more discerning eye for the asthetic, might be out producing the boys all over the reef with their keepers.....For that, james has only himself to blame Congrats Sarah, and keep showing us the great work! james 0 Posted September 18, 2005 Hi Gang, OK, I went ahead and posted all of the photos she selected. She hasn't copied any into her favorites folder yet (slacker!) so I'll post some of MY favorite Sarah photos. Something tells me that we're going to be seeing a lot of photos from Bali this week...:-) For Alex: OK, phew! I found that the Ikelite TTL delivered very good exposures for Macro. The photos were within about 1/2 stop of being overeposed - which is a very good place to be. The shadows end of the equation really depends on the noise performance of your camera and the 20D is very good. I still prefer to have some blacks when appropriate though. Hope y'all enjoy there. herbko 0 Posted September 18, 2005 I love this shrimp in anemone shot: http://www.reefpix.org/gallery/album149/050815_bali_MG_2193 Great background colors and textures and really conveys the tiny size of the shrimp.
