Getting ready for Rita!

Recommended Posts

Hi Gang,

I'm getting ready for a Cat 5 hurricane! Boarded up the house and am stopping every two hrs or so to check the latest predictions. Yesterday, the storm was going to pass to my west and I'd be on the bad side. Today, it looks like the storm will pass to the east so I'll be on the "better" side. Still not good!

My thoughts go out to everyone on the Gulf Coast. Be safe!

James

be safe ... and enjoy it as much as you can .. always look on the bright side buddy .. there will be some awesome photo ops.

I just looked at the update .. apparently Cat 4 now ... but by a few miles an hour .. still gonna have gusts over 200 ... its moving real slow so will be around a long long time.

good luck and i hoe you and yours are all safe thats all that really counts right.

Good luck James. We've been making sure all of our employees got out of Houston today. Most of them turned around when they faced 10-12 hours on the road. Hopefully the storm will keep heading east. Be safe.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the good wishes. I made it to College Station at Sarah's and it shouldn't be too bad here at all.

Cheers

James

Hey James, glad you made it to cow town. We have had word from our old colleagues at the college of vet med there that they have shut down the animal hospital and turned it over to human patients... hope they don't need to take too many in.

How long did it take you to get up there? CNN is suggesting horror stories of 12hrs+ to Navasota!

Hi Craig,

290 was moving at about 2-3 miles/hr so I ducked off and headed north on back roads. I ended up hitting 105 and taking it to Navasota, then 2154 to CS. That worked well - I made it there w/ 1/2 a tank of gas left.

Oh, forgot to say - it took me 6 hrs to get here. It usually takes 1 1/2.

Cheers

James

Good luck to you, Sarah and your entourage, hope the path is not to destructive, next time I'm bitching again the winter storm, I'll try to remember Rita & Katrina. A proper reminder to treat mother nature with due respect.

Godspeed my friend.

Post Rita report:

From 15 miles north of Houston, we got mostly wind and some rain, though not much. A few tree branches down. We didn't lose power, water, cable, or internet. Worst part was the 48 hour traffic jam on the highway between Houston and Dallas and the fact there isn't any gasoline to be had in all of Houston. All in all, we got lucky!

My thoughts are with those affected by this storm in eastern Texas and southwestern Louisiana.

Word from our neighbors is that we had no damage to our house. Woohoo!!!! Now to figure out how to get home from Austin. Or why.

Cheers

We dodged the bullet this time!

I'm so glad we stayed put and didn't try to get out of town - we only ended up with branches in the yard and 1 inch of rain (I was hoping for much more - now we'll have to run the sprinklers).

We even found a gas station today near the house that was selling - had to wait in line for a little while, but we were able to fill up. It was nothing like the 2 hour gas lines in MS when I went to help my parents after Katrina.

My father in law is staying at our house for a few more days before attempting the drive back down to his home in Galveston - trying to miss the traffic.

Good luck James! Give me a call when you make it back in...

Glad to hear all of you made it through safely. It's amazing there wasn't as much damage as all the forecasters were predicting. Amazing in a good way for a change. I always hear things like this come in threes, let's hope that's not the case with this year's gulf hurricanes.

Good to hear Christa. I wish I'd stayed but I'm glad we stuck to our plans to join our friends at Lake Travis.

Traffic was really light and I made it home without major delays. My house looks great - I laughed my a** off when I saw some plastic trash bags out front when I returned. Our yard crew had come today and cut the lawn!!!! Our compost pile is about 6' tall now, so I guess they had to put the overflow out on the curb. Life is funny.

Cheers

James
