Wetpixel Whale Sharks 2021

Wetpixel has run trips to Isla Mujeres, Mexico, for the past 10 years to document the amazing whale shark (Rhincodon typus) aggregation occurs here between May and September.

It is true to say that witnessing and photographing or filming the incredible numbers of whale sharks that aggregate here should represent an aim on every underwater image maker’s “bucket list.” During our last trips in 2019 trips, we had days where there were hundreds of sharks, at times so densely packed that it was hard to avoid them!

Like all Wetpixel trips, it is designed to be underwater imaging friendly, with boat timings specifically tweaked to maximize the quietest times on the water when the sharks tend to be in a dense conglomeration. We are currently the only operator that specifically caters for the super-productive times before and after most of the boats arrive and depart from the area.

We have also selected dates, which our experience suggests are the times for sharks’ densest groupings.

Please note that these are snorkeling trips and are hence open to divers and non-divers.

We stay in the Hotel Playa La Media Luna, a comfortable and quiet hotel situated close to town and the jetties where we embark each day.

The hotel can supply various accommodation options, including suites, bungalows, and a self-catering cottage.

For 2022, we plan to run one trip to Isla Mujeres for the whale sharks. The trips will run concurrently, with two boats going out each day. Each boat will have a trip leader and 6 participants, giving a total of 12 places available.

The dates for 2022 are:

24 to 30 July

Arrival will be on 24 July, with 5 days on the water (25,26,27,28.29) before departure on 30 July.

Prices:

The trip will be $3,350.00 per person, which includes:

• Private boat charter (7:00am - 4:00pm for 5 days) with experienced captains. Boats have shade and plenty of space.
• Simple lunch on boat + non-alcoholic drinks.
• Shared golf cart rental to get around the island.
• Transfers to and from Cancun airport and Isla Mujeres ferry.
• 7 days 6 nights twin shared (6 nights: 1 day before to 1 day after) accommodation at Playa Media Luna. Single rooms, suites, bungalows, and other accommodation options are available for a small supplement.
