Sony unveils the RX100 IV compact camera
Sony has announced two new pro compact cameras. The RX100 IV is of interest for underwater use and features up to 40x slow motion capture (at 960p) and up to 5 minutes of 4K filming. Autofocus has been improved and there are new customizable controls. It features a ZEISS® Vario-Sonnar T* 24-70mm (35mm equivalent) F1.8-F2.8 lens.

Sony has announced the a7r II full frame mirrorless camera. It has a back-illuminated 42.4 MP sensor and on-sensor phase detection autofocus. ISO is expandable up to 102,400 and video can be captured in 4k (UHD) video at 30p/25p or 24p in the XAVC S format.

Sony announces new lenses
Sony has announced a series of new lenses and converters. For underwater use, these include the FE 90mm f2.8 macro, the FE 28mm f2 wide-angle, two new wide-angle converters and two fisheye converters.
Sony announces 4K camcorder
Sony has released a new Handycam that will record 4K footage at 100Mbps in an XAVC format at 25p. The FDR-AXP33 has built-in image stabilization and an “enhanced high-performance electronic viewfinder”. It has a manual control ring and a button that can be assigned to zoom, focus or exposure.
Sony announces the a7II
Sony Japan has announced the release of the a7II mirrorless camera. Initially only available in Japan, the new camera features a 24.3 million pixels 35mm full size “Exmor” CMOS sensor and 5 axis image stabilization. Perhaps more critically, Sony claims the AF is 30% faster and that subject acquisition and motion tracking performance are better than that of the previous models.
Sony poised to revolutionise image sensors
It looks as if Sony is poised to revolutionise sensor technology. PetaPixel has posted an article about a new patent made by the company that appears to show a whole new technique of recording color information at pixel level. “Active-Pixel Color Sampling” (APACS) uses a pixel level moving electronic color filter to sense RGB information, rather than the conventional interpolation process. The benefits of the scheme include dedicated phone/email support, 3 day repair turnaround time with product loan options, free camera and/or lens maintenance, invitation to special events, in and outbound shipping costs and evaluation loaners.
Sony announces the α5100 camera
Sony has announced the release of their α5100 mirrorless camera. It has a 4.3 MP APS-C Exmor™ CMOS sensor, the BIONZ X processor and the Hybrid AF system from the α6000. Video can be recorded in XAVC S2 formats, which can output at 50 Mbps and in dual formats to the same card.
