The summer season is here, which also means the once yearly coral spawning event is almost here as well. A coral spawning video by Natalia V. Osipova is now up on the New York Times. The mass spawning event follows the lunar cycle and typically occurs once a year after a late summer full moon, but is not entirely predictable.

Warm ocean waters suddenly teem with trillions of eggs and sperm that swirl in the currents and merge to form new life, a profligate frenzy that can leave the ocean’s surface awash in pink flotsam.
