Underwater Journal issue 21 available for download

Underwater Journal issue 21 is now available for download. In it, there are two feature articles by Wetpixel members Tim Rock and Doug Ebersole. Tim provided a story on diving with humpback whales in Tonga, with Doug bringing us whale sharks off the northern tip of Yucatan. Also in this issue are articles about CCR diving with trimix, and diving in Rangiroa.

Underwater journal is a free download available in iPad or pdf versions.

Underwater photography magazine to be launched

Scuba Diver AustralAsia, DivePhotoGuide and Edition Fifty Fathoms join forces to launch an underwater photography magazine. To be called Scuba Diver Through the Lens, the magazine will be published quarterly in print and digital formats and according to the editors is:

“Designed to educate the global underwater photography and videography community on equipment, technique and travel destinations as well as highlight the world’s top underwater image-makers.”

The first issue will be launched at DEMA in November.

Study shows humpback whales use bubble nets Photo

Study shows humpback whales use bubble nets

David Wiley of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and others report in the latest issue of the journal Behaviour how humpback whales in the Gulf of Maine use bubble nets to corral prey. They attached digital suction-cup tags that recorded depth and orientation in 3-D to whales, allowing the scientists to recreate three-dimensional images of whale swimming behavior and bubble release.

The study also reports that humpback whales work in teams of at least two individuals and are not beyond robbing the prey from the bubble nets set up by others.

Wes Skiles named as National Geographic Explorer of the Year Photo

Wes Skiles named as National Geographic Explorer of the Year

National Geographic named the late Wes Skiles and environmental anthropologist Kenny Broad as National Geographic “Explorers of the Year” at last night’s “Evening of Exploration” event. This new award was presented in recognition of their extraordinary achievements in exploring and documenting the Blue Holes of the Bahamas in 2010.

Broad is a professor at the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science and director of the University of Miami’s Leonard and Jayne Abess Center for Ecosystem Science and Policy. He also co-directs the Center for Research on Environmental Decisions at Columbia University whilst Skiles worked as a freelance photographer and produced, directed and filmed over 100 television films, many of which have won international awards and acclaim. Skiles died following a dive off of Florida in July 2010

Last minute spots available for Mexico whale shark trip

Join Wetpixel senior moderator Shawn Heinrichs and JASA owner Jim Abernethy for an opportunity to swim in the largest whale shark gathering known on earth at Isla Mujeres, Mexico. Aggregations exceed several hundred whale sharks in blue water. The trip will cater for ocean enthusiast and photographers looking to maximize their time with the whale sharks. Each trip is 5 days on the water and although the boat will hold 10 people, it will be limited to 5 guests only. A few spots remain on the July 4-8, 9-13 and 14-18 trips.

Project Seahorse has published a video showing an insight into the weird and wonderful seahorse world onto YouTube. As seahorses suffer from the same pressures and benefit from many of the same interventions as other marine life, they can be used as a euphemism for the plight of the aquatic realm in general, and offer potential solutions. The video also highlights Project Seahorse’s work to protect them.
