Video: The bull sharks from Playa

New non-governmental organization XOOC has published a mini-documentary about the bull sharks of Playa del Carmen, Mexico onto Vimeo. Twenty five sharks, including pregnant females, were caught by fishermen in the area during November 2010. The animals were taken for their fins and this effectively destroyed a fledgling shark tourism industry in the area.

The film attempts to underline that those sharks had the potential to be great sustainable assets to the tourist industry, and that these earning are now lost.

Trip report: Nuweiba, Egyptian Red Sea

Egypt’s Red Sea is synonymous with fantastic coral reefs, blue water and brightly colored schools of anthia goldfish, but curiously seems to not to be highly regarded for macro or super macro underwater photography.

Over the past few years however, I had heard of some of the big names in UK underwater photography leading trips to a relatively obscure resort in the Northern Red Sea and returning with images that were unique for the area. I resolved to visit Nuweiba myself to see if this could be the destination for Red Sea muck diving.

Adobe warns of bug in Lightroom 3.4 and Camera RAW 6.4

The Adobe Lightroom team has found a bug in the latest versions of Lightroom and Camera RAW. Versions 3.4 and 6.4 respectively have a problem that occurs with saving metadata to JPEG images that already have unusually large blocks of private camera data. In these instances, the software will cause severe levels of corruption to the images. The team report that this is a rare occurrence, but advise that people working with large numbers of JPEG files should wait for an updated release of Lightroom and Camera RAW as a precautionary measure.

Full details of the issue can be found on the Adobe Lightroom Journal. The bugs should be fixed by update 3.4.1 for Lightroom and 6.4.1 for Camera RAW, both of which are due for release on 27 May.
