Final call: Capture the World Underwater Video Challenge

The first annual Capture The World Underwater Video Challenge submission deadline is December 31st. Entries can be travelogues, environmental videos, best critter behaviors or any other special underwater video and the competition offers prizes from the Agressor/Dancer fleet and Gates Underwater Products. Full entry details and competition rules are listed on the Gates site. The winning entry will also be showcased at the San Diego UnderSea Film Exhibition in summer 2011.

Shiver:// Shark Finning in Mozambique seeks to expose the “dark and brutal realities” of the finning industry. One of the producers, Dave Charley says:

“In Mozambique, like many countries the world over, local fishermen are paid handsomely for supplying middlemen with dried shark fins - the fishermen oblivious to what the fins are used for,” and. “Coupled with increasingly sophisticated boats and fishing techniques, the demand for shark fin soup has ensured that we have lost an estimated 90 per cent of sharks in the last 50 years, with 30 per cent of species now listed as endangered or critically endangered.

Call for entries: British Underwater Image Festival 2011

The British Underwater Image Festival 2011 is being incorporated into The Big Scuba Show at Olympia, London on 19-20 February. The competition is in it’s sixth consecutive year and is free to enter. Film and still are represented in the entry categories, with specific classes for images shot in the UK. Sponsors have offered thousands of pounds worth of prizes across the stills and film categories.

Deadline for entries is 7 January 2011.

Call for entries: San Diego-La Jolla Underwater Park competition

Birch Aquarium at Scripps is hosting a photography competition to highlight the San Diego-La Jolla Underwater Park in celebration of Underwater Parks Day on Jan. 15, 2011. Underwater parks, or marine protected areas, help to preserve important underwater habitats, yet for many these treasures are hidden from view. The aim of the competition is to show the underwater beauty of these parks. The competition is open to all, and entries must be underwater photographs of the San Diego-La Jolla Underwater Park, including the marine life refuge and the ecological reserve.

Deadline for submissions is January 3, 2011.

The recent shark fin soup protest, staged at the Las Vegas Hilton during the DEMA trade show has been a success. The hotel management has agreed to withdraw shark fin products from it’s restaurant menu. Many thanks to all Wetpixel members who responded to the forum posts. Sharksavers most recent newsletter carries some interesting observations as to why it was to prove successful. This form of protest can be effective, but their points make a lot of sense for those planning a similar event.

Silver Shark Festival 2011 Photo

Silver Shark Festival 2011

The Silver Shark International Underwater art festival will be held in Kiev, Ukraine from 14 to 17 April 2011. As a part of the festival, the organizers host a photo and video competition, as well as competitions for the best TV programs and paintings/sculptures. The deadlines for entries is 10 February 2011.

The festival has been held in Ukraine annually since 2001, with a view to popularizing underwater art and recreation and involving the public in solving environmental problems.

Howard Hall has posted a video showing some of the filming of of his IMAX film Under the Sea 3D to Vimeo. The film illustrates some of the complexities of underwater filming using an IMAX camera which weighs 1200lbs and runs for three minutes before needing a film change. The footage was shot whilst filming Great Whites in Southern Australia, and the full IMAX film was released to theaters in February 2009.

Nauticam deserve serious kudos for getting a housing ready so soon after the release of the camera, shown for the first time at DEMA and sent straight to Wetpixel for testing!
