Hello all, Did a quick video of couple of clips I got on my trip to Cocos on December 14-24 onboard Okeanos Aggressor. We were not exactly lucky with the conditions for this trip as pelagics had a bit of a week off, I suspect moon phase was probably key (it seems that the current trip is having a blast as my friend is still on board :-/ ) That's my first attempt at editing video somewhat moderately complex so things are not exactly tip-top but I like the result so far. I retrospectively should have done a little bit more videos. In the last 4 days, I fixed the GoPro on top of my dome to have continuous shooting. I had left the GoPro magic filter at home, I would have been interested to see the difference. I missed some close encounters not having that where I had a Galapagos shark shooting straight through a channel at coming head on at me, a tiger shark coming on top and behind us while we were busy looking the other way and another one shadowing me for a minute. I never had the video on for those encounters or was of course busy facing it the other way while my head was looking somewhere els The dolphin shooting is courtesy of Capt Alberto Munoz from Okeanos aggressor, we got them again on the next dive and I was busy trying to shoot them on still (they were a bit more nervous). I started to post some pictures on Flickr [vimeo]56530182[/vimeo]

Hi all. Well santa was very good to me and bought me a 5d mark iii body for Christmas. Of course we all know that the body is only the start of a very expensive hobby. I'm coming off using a Sony HD 550 video camera so, apart from being able to use my Sola 1200's for video lights, I'm really starting from scratch. So my question is this: how would you start amassing all of the accessories - memory cards, lenses, underwater housing, monitors, filters/ diopters, carrying cases, etc if you wanted to make sure you bought the best, even if it takes a while to buy it all? What would you buy, and in what order? What is table stakes, what are bells and whistles / nice-to-haves? My intention is to predominantly use the 5dmkiii for video, but I might toy around with stills if I can. Given I've got no experience with DSLRs, let's say I want to start practicing with the camera topside for a couple of months, then buy the UW housing and go underwater locally. My local playground is Sydney where the viz is anywhere from ~8-20 meters, relatively greenish water with limited opportunity for really wide angle shots. Then I'll take it travelling - likely next stop for that will be the Galapagos - so wide-angle shots mostly. Then after that, it'll be Komodo for muck / macro and wide angle.. Any guidance is much appreciated.

I am selling my carefully maintained backup video system, all in perfect working order, including: · Gates housing for Sony HC7/9 with the Fathom W25 wide angle port (with instruction manual and spare parts/O ring kit.) This housing has extremely reliable mechanical controls for most camera functions (including white balance), a large viewing window for the camera LCD display, and an internal red filter that can be moved in/out. · Sony HDR-HC-7 video camera (In original box, with instruction manual, all original connection cables, Sony FH60 battery and an extra, higher capacity Sony FH70 battery, standard charger, extra Sony BC—TRP compact travel battery charger, Sony Wide angle conversion lens (0.7) for use topside, 3 blank Sony videotapes). · Pair of Gates/Greenforce Squid 50 HID video lights (With a total of 4 Flexi I NiMH batteries, each of which powers one light for 90+ minutes [spec, sheet says 120 minutes], 2 battery chargers with several optional international plugs, flexible arms that attach to the Gates housing). The extra set of batteries allows easy change between dives. · Pelican M2500 Storm Case (Airline carry-on size. With cutouts for the housing, Fathom lens, and light heads. Room for more items with additional cutouts.) This system has produced stunning video for me. I will especially miss the superb Fathom lens. The housing was inspected/overhauled at Gates last year and is under Extended Warranty until June 2013. The video camera was recently cleaned/maintained by Sony. The housing, port, and lights show cosmetic wear marks and some tarnishing of their anodized aluminum finishes as occurs with saltwater exposure, but everything works perfectly, and the interior and all mechanisms are pristine. $1950 for the whole system (cost over $8000). Pay Pal payment please. Can inspect in the Los Angeles area and in the photos below.

I've completed my first 360 underwater video using multiple GoPro Hero2 cameras in a custom designed and built housing specific to this purpose. I made the first full test run with running cameras in October and unfortunately the vis was only 20 ft and I was at 70-80 fsw with fairly low light. So reds are absent even after an attempt at color correction in post. Here are links to two presentation formats: Interactive 360 video version This is only a start. I plan to add radial lighting to the housing over the winter. Let me know what you think. Thanks, Brian

Kit includes: Sony EX1 (345 hours) charger 2 x Sony BP-U30 battery 3 x Swit S-8U62 Sony SxS 8 GB card remote microphone Gates underwater housing Fathom wide angle port (with floats) flat port There is minor sun damage on the edge of the viewfinder. It is only cosmetic and does not effect the screen. The strap connectors has been removed from the palm grip. This makes for easier fit into the housing, however you cannot reattach the strap for hand held use out of the housing. $9000.00 USD

I'm selling my trusty Amphibico Phenom/Sony Z1U system. I listed this awhile back but have had no serious offers, so I'm knocking $500 off the price. For the last couple years I've been shooting primarily with a Canon 5D MKII, and now upgrading to a Nikon D800, so it's clearly obvious to me that I won't be shooting the Phenom Z1 enough to make it worth keeping. The exterior of the housing was recently refinished with a black wrinkle finish to match my Aquatica system. At that time, it was completely disassembled and all o-rings either serviced or replaced. It has not been in the water since refurb. The 94 deg. optic also had a fresh dome put on during refurb. It also has a flat port for macro that has only been on the system a couple times. It has an Xit404 Pentamirror for easy wide angle viewing of the top LCD. The system has two spare handles (one left, one right) and a pair of spare acrylic domes for the 94 deg optic (both in good shape with no scratches). It comes with Amphibico's custom fitted Pelican travel case. The camera is in good working order. It made one trip to Sony about 3 years ago for a new tape drive mechanism. It also had the viewfinder LCD changes at the same time because it was showing some burn marks. The camera's main LCD shows a few bright "speckles", but they are only visible when shooting a really dark area and haven't bothered me to the point that I felt like changing it out. I've included a photo of the LCD so that you can see it's not a major issue. Included in the system is: Phenom Z1 housing. 94 degree WA optic. Flat port 2 spare dome ports 2 spare handles Xit404 Pentamirror Sony Z1U video camera Some misc camera accessories (as pictured) Fitted Pelican case Complete package cost is US$3500. I will ship anywhere in the US for Free (by ground). If you need it faster, just pay the difference in shipping cost. It will ship with the housing stuff in the Pelican case and the camera and accessories in a separate box. I'm currently in Indonesia, but the camera and housing are in the US all packed and ready for shipment. I will consider international sales, but shipping will be negotiable.

I posted a short video from a series of 3 dives I did last Friday Oct 19th at the Coronado Islands in Baja California very close to San Diego. It's just footage from that one day, but it features a number of sea lions in very good viz (for this area). Additionally there's a whitetail major at 1:36 which is an unusual fish to be found in this area (usually occurs quite a ways south of here). Footage was shot with a Sony HDR-XR520v camcorder in a Bluefin Pro Housing from Light and Motion, using Light and Motion Sunray 2000x video lights (with lithium batteries). -Roger Uzun The video can be seen on youtube here (up to 1080p) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qxhj1mQb7-c or on Vimeo here (720p) - https://vimeo.com/51975063

The Bluefin HC1 is designed with an integrated system of housing, lights, monitor, and optics. Set-up is a snap. Controls include power on/off, record start/stop, double tap variable zoom control, electronic manual focus and momentary auto focus on/off. Housing also provides access to iris control and the tele macro function. Smart Grip Handles provide access to VTR playback for instant footage review. Also included is a Flip Down Color Correction Filter that provides easy transitions between ambient and artificial light. Smart Grip Handles put important functions where you need them, at your fingertips. Handles provide non-penetrating push button controls, utilizing IR transmitters and receivers. No fumbling around for awkward levers and dials. As such, the housing is a natural extension of your hands, so capturing that perfect video sequence is made easy. LMI Sunray S Elite Video Lights (w/infinity arms, battery pods) use memory free NiMH batteries that have a 40-minute burn time on high. Both the Classic and Elite systems offer 3 light intensity levels for exposure control on cameras that don't provide that function. They have 20-Watt halogen bulbs and cast an extremely even light on your subject. The Elite lights have underwater plugable connection cables, the Classic light cables are permanently built into the pod. The Elite kit includes a 1.5- hour smart charger that accepts voltages from 110V to 240V while the Classic kit includes a 110V overnight trickle charger. Asking $2,500 OBO (be reasonable). Proceeds go towards dolphin conservation. Questions? harzen@bluedolphinresearch.com

My wife has been doing UW video for some time. Her camera is an old Sony (using mini DV cassettes for recording) in a Light & Motion housing. She wants to upgrade to an HD video camera. We went to a local camera shop that could only recommend a high end Canon & a housing that (combined) would cost a total of about $5,000; or a Go Pro. From one extreme to another. Does anyone have any recommendations for a camera & housing somewhere in the middle of these two?
