RWBrooks 26 Posted September 19, 2010 Hi, we have a shoot using the RED Hydroflex housing system in the coming week. I'm wondering if anyone out there has used this system before? We are using coms and a surface feed for monitor, operating depth will be about 60 feet. Any heads ups would be appreciated. Cheers Richard
DeanB 19 Posted September 19, 2010 No Idea, however it sounds pretty cool ...
Mike L 0 Posted September 19, 2010 Sorry my only experience is with the Gates Deep Red and the Aqua Video. I wonder why they chose that housing over the Deep Red.

Drew 0 Posted September 19, 2010 That's simple, Mike. The hydroflex has more support for cranes and remote shootiing with surface feed and power etc, especially with the hydrohead which has been used in many features and broadcast proj. Then there's the Preston motorized controls that allows for control of focus and zoom on housing or mounted on the hydrohead. It allows for much more specialized shooting than the gates. Richard I've only seen the Red housing fleetingly so I don't know what it's like in the field. I've seen the Arri 35mm variants off and on but don't have a clear memory on it at all. I do remember the housing controls can be done from the surface or with an AC. I suggest you practice using the Preston controls as it feels a lot different from dials on the housing. I remember a few ACs like to mark the Preston dials (that's why it's white) for settings for focus pull/focal length. Sorry I can't be of much help. Perhaps you should contact Pete@Hydroflex or someone who's used the housing and its controls.
RWBrooks 26 Posted September 19, 2010 I'm surprised by the agencies choice too but the DP (Pete Zuccarini) is on board so I guess it is an informed choice, we will see. Camera equipment arrives from LA today.......fingers crossed. Will be interesting to see how it goes Cheers Richard
Drew 0 Posted September 19, 2010 Oh so you're the CO or AC? Well good luck with the shoot. Try to take some shoots to post here if it's allowed.
RWBrooks 26 Posted September 19, 2010 Hi At the moment I'm AC and board locations scout. We have a rehearsal day Tuesday so a good opportunity to configure the system and the shoot on Thursday/Friday. I hope to be able to get some shots of the operation and take some notes on the logistics of the shoot. I had to do an audition for the "hero talent" as they call the actor but they found someone else (thankfully)! Ciao for now darlings! Richard
DeanB 19 Posted September 20, 2010 Good old Pete ... Or Zucchy as we call him... His film credits are nearly as long as mine Okay I've never met the man But looking at his C.V mate I'd make the most of him while he's there Dive safe DeanB
Mike L 0 Posted September 20, 2010 I asked because it appears he is using it at depth (mentioned 60 feet). Ive heard the Hydroflex is great in pools and when used with cranes, but that it is not nearly as ergonomic when handled by hand. Cheaper...not so sure about that considering what hydroflex products generally rent for. Best of luck on the shoot, keep us posted!

jonny shaw 16 Posted September 20, 2010 Cheaper ??? DeanB I think Hydro flex will make Gates look cheap! Have fun Richard..... I reckon you will learn a stack but you will be fine. I would also definitely mark your focus points on the focus knob
matiasmesa 0 Posted September 21, 2010 I think Hydro flex will make Gates look cheap! Have fun Richard..... I reckon you will learn a stack but you will be fine. I would also definitely mark your focus points on the focus knob Hi Everybody, Im new to the forum. I owned a Hydroflex 35MM UW housing and and now I own a Deep RED. The Hydroflex system is more "Film people" friendly. Hydroflex system is ready to be used with a 1t AC , the control of the lens is thought that way, while the gates is more orientated towards open water jobs where the operator ned to judge conditions and operate focus and F stop on its own. Both have Video output, But what is more important, hydroflex is Hollywoods best UW brand and that counts as well. Best Matias Mesa www.karmavision.com.ar Buenos Aires- Argentina.
