Another Sea of Cortez mystery

We found these all over. I am assuming some sort of mollusc? Full ones were a dull purple in colour, empty, white like these. The individual "cases" were about one inch long.

 

Any clues out there?

Yup, mollusc, possibly a whelk.

They have a strong resemblance to Murex egg cases I have seen photos of; perhaps that's what they are...
