Before housing the Sony FS7, help me

Recommended Posts

I would like to know if anybody tried the Sony FS7 underwater. The only footage I could find is a swimming pool clip done by Sealux. I have bought their housings before and I was happy with the build quality of German engineering. I wish they would try the camera in real environment like other manufacturers do :).

I am concerned of the following:

> Does the camera perform good white balance underwater?,

> Does it execute good color rendition unlike the FS100 & FS700 that exhibited color science issues as I recall? I think this camera is an XDCAM similar to the EX1& 3 family.

> Low light performance.

What attracts me to this camera is the following:

+ Metabones speed booster which produces almost FF equivalent enabling better wide angle usage,

+ Good dynamic range,

+ 10 bit 422 makes the footage tolerance for color correction.

+ Availability of both S-log, standard & hyper gammas as options,

+ Slo-motion

I would like to hear from you guys on what you think of this camera even if you haven't tried it.

Thank you in advance :)

I am also wondering about this set up - have been following Subal / Sealux for some time but cannot find from either any test footage. The camera specs are awesome but the white balance / color issues on the FS700 make me very hesitant in investing in this ~$20,000 set up!

Let me know if you find anything.

Cheers

I've been in touch with Sealux for another housing. I would suggest you contact them or give them a call directly with any Q you may have on that housing option. They also seem to know the cams pretty well for which they produce housings.

They are very helpful.

Thanks for your reply. It looks like no body is using the fs7 for underwater. :(

I shoot with the FS7 regularly for commercial work (non-underwater work, that is), and based on those experiences with the camera I feel confident that it would be at home in the water. The 10-bit color for internal recording should render clean gradients with no banding artifacts. It's a stellar camera image, as long as you can work around the slow menus and other setup annoyances.

I just purchased a 10m bag for the FS7 to use on a few January projects in shallow depths. I will likely shoot with the FS7's LC709-TypeA MLUT applied, or Slog3. At that depth, probably no need for a red filter.

Thanks for the insight. Check this thread for low light shooting that might be applicable incase the visibility is not that good.

The recommendation is to use either hypergamma 7 with noise suppression on or Slog2:

Please do share your experience and findings :)
