Call for Entries: Ocean Film Challenge
Do you want to see your film shown as a headline event during the Environmental Film Festival, the International Wildlife Film Festival and AudFest? Now is you chance if you enter the Ocean Film Challenge. Hosted by Audience Awards and in conjunction with HATCH, it is now seeking entries from filmmakers showcasing “the impact humans have on the Ocean and the actions individuals can take to save the human race from extinction.”
Fourth Element re-launches Thermocline using ghost fishing nets
Fourth Element has re-launched the popular neutrally buoyant Thermocline line using recycled plastic from ghost fishing nets. The re-boot is called Thermocline - Next Generation Oceanwear. The company announced its commitment to ocean conservation in the fall of last year as well as goals to become Ocean Positive and to eliminate plastic in the packaging of all products by 2020.

Becky Kagan Schott has kindly shared the details of what went into capturing her stunning image of the salon of the Yacht Gunilda. The wreck is in Lake Superior, Canada at 270 feet in 38°F water. Becky and her team ended up spending 2 hours in the water to capture this memorable image.

For over 40 years, Peter Rowlands has been a central figure in the underwater imaging community. He is an award winning photographer, filmmaker, mentor, designer and innovator. He is also the publisher of Underwater Photography Magazine (UwP) and has just released its milestone issue number 100. Alex Mustard and Martin Edge have kindly contributed to an interview about Peter, UwP magazine and underwater imaging over the past 45 years.

Western Digital announces portable SSDs
Western Digital has announced two new portable drives specifically designed for photographers and videographers. The SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD offers IP55 water and dust resistance with a USB 3.1 Gen 2 interface and reads speeds up to 550 MB/s and the SanDisk My Passport Wireless SSD offers an SSD drive with an enclosure with an integrated wifi connection and a 6700mAh battery.
Microbeads ban goes into effect in UK this week
A ban on using microbeads in products went into effect on tuesday of this week in the UK. Manufacturers are banned from using the plastic microbeads in products such as toothpaste, and facial soap. A ban on sales of such products will go into effect in July. Thousands of tons of the small plastic beads make their way into the oceans every year as they are virtually impossible to filter from water treatment plants before being discharged into waterways.
Green sea turtles in Pacific rookery are turning 99% female
At Ingram Island off Northern Australia, the Pacific Island’s largest green sea turtle rookery, scientists have found that female sea turtles outnumber males by 116 to 1. Scientists expected to see a higher percentage of female sea turtles to males as warmer sand during egg incubation leads to female gene expression and climate change has lead to warmer temperatures in this part of the world. However, they were taken aback by the degree to which females outnumbered males.
